IIRC, several “ultimate secrets of the Watchers” have been presented before, each one contradicting the others. I don’t think the revelation in Earth X is necessarily the “true” secret, if you get my point.
And again IIRC, one other time where The Watcher interfered was during Secret Wars II (ugh), where the Watchers agree the Beyonder have to be stopped, and assign Uatu the job of pleading with the Molecule Man to intervene. Scores a 9.8 on the cheese factor IMO.
The Sphinx was actually the Egyptian sorceror whose staff is eaten by Moses’ staff. The sorceror is exiled. Eventually, he finds a mystic gem which gives him great power and immortality. He becomes more and more powerful in his search for a way to defeat the curse and die. Eventually, the Sphinx merged with the brain tank/computer of (whichever race it was that gave Nova his powers). This gave him tremendous power. He decided he no longer wanted to die, but to rule. He went to Egypt, created some very nice pyramids and fought Galactus. The Devourer Of Worlds kicked his butt.
Galactus then destroyed the gem that was the source of the Sphinx’s power and sent him back in time to a few minutes before he discovered it. Galactus intent was to trap the Sphinx in a time loop in which he would be aware that he was repeating events but unable to to act differently.
It didn’t quite work out that way. Due to a minor slip up, Galactus sent the Sphinx back in time but not back into his old self. There were now two Sphinxes standing before the gem- the original sorceror and the Sphinx who had fought Galactus and lost. The older Sphinx had his younger self prepare a machine to repair the gem after Galactus crushes it, and a hibernation chamber for the older Sphinx to sleep in until after Galactus had crushed the gem and left-several thousand years in their future. He then erased his younger self’s memory of these events.
The sorceror then took the gem, became the Sphinx and lived through all the events the older self had. But after the younger Sphinx defeat by Galactus, the older Sphinx awakened and repaired the gem. But his repairs were flawed. In a fight with the Thing, the gem crumbled to dust. The Sphinx soon followed.
Living Tribunal- IMHO (supported somewhat by events in Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity Watch) Living Tribunal is supposed to be the direct agent of God. When he decrees that the gems must be seperated, Warlock blasts him. LT is unaffected. He says ‘I serve One who is above even the power of the Infinity Gems.’
Number Six
Eternity is not the whole of the Marvel Universe. He is only the embodiment of limitless space. Infinity (IIRC she first appeared in Infinity War) is his female counterpart and is the embodiment of limitless time.
Molecule Man and The Beyonder
I have an issue of FF in which it’s revealed that the same accident that gave MM his powers is the one that poked a hole into the Beyonder’s dimension and gave him knowledge of our existence. After some chatting with the Shaper Of Worlds (who is revealed to be a Cosmic Cube created by Skrulls) and Kubik (a Cosmic Cube created by humans) it is revealed that the Beyonder is actually a prenatal Cosmic Cube, and due to the accident so is MM. They combine to become a new cube. Other Dopers have informed me that MM has somehow become an individual being again.
RE Earth X
Some of it is interesting. IMHO Some is stupid. And some contradicts long standing continuity. None of it should be taken as canon.
Anybody know where the Phoenix Force works on that power scale? I remember an issue of Excalibur where Galactus showed up with a black box o’ Phoenix killing, saying that if the Rachel Summers Phoenix didn’t step into the box so he could kill her, he’d eat the Earth (he figured she was one of the few beings capable of really, really hurting him, and it was in his power to snuff her, so there he was).
Combat ensued between Phoenix and Nova; during the fight, Phoenix punched Nova to the moon. Nova got up and flew right back, at which time Phoenix realized the fight was kind of pointless.
Just as she was about to step into the box, Galactus looked up on the hill and there are The Watcher, Roma, and the Grey Man, just standing there.
Galactus asks why they’re there, and The Grey Man said they just wanted to be there when Galactus screwed up.
Rachel steps into the box, Galactus pushes the big black button o’ Phoenix killing… and all the stars in the universe go out. The Gray man falls down laughing.
“Well, crap,” thinks Galactus, “that’s not what I had in mind.” So he pushes the big red button o’ Phoenix resurrecting and the stars light up again. Phoenix steps out of the box looking… perturbed…
DocCathode: I draw my description of Eternity from Fantastic Four vol. 3 #48
Roma: I tend to a being known as Eternity. Within it, all that ever was, ever is, or ever will be, exists.
Having reread that, I see that my description is a bit imprecise. It would be better to say that all of the Marvel Multiverse exists within Eternity, which still puts him roughly at the power level I listed.
Galactus as Stan The Man intended him was, for all intents and purposes, God in the Marvel Universe.
The Living Tribunal may or may not be more powerful, he’s not mentioned enough to give a clear account of who or what exactly he is (though it was implied that he could have stopped Thanos even when Eternity couldn’t.)
There have been challengers and contrived characters over the years that were presumed to be more powerful than him (the beyonder, the lame, NON-CANON “brothers”…etc) but they were mostly saying “look how cool and powerful this new guy is - he can beat Galactus!”
“The One Above All”, if I’m not mistaken, started being mentioned because of morons writing in and complaining about Thor being called a god and Odin being called “The Allfather” and “Omnipotent.” He is not canon and will rarely be mentioned and never be shown in true Marvel continuity.
Galactus and Eternity are twin brothers and, outside of lame mini-series’ and big promotional events (“The Death of Galactus”   ) they are the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Period.
The original Phoenix’s power grew exponentially every time she used it. To fuel the Phoenix Force, she started eating stars. Had she lived longer her power would have continued to grow , and her hunger would likewise have continued to grow.
In the words of Lilandra, Majestrix Shi’ar, “Galactus only consumes planets. The Phoenix consumes everything.”
This is why I quit reading X-Men after they resurrected Jean Grey. She sacrificed herself to save the entire universe. @#%@#% retcons.
But wait. I have an FF comic where Thor tells Odin that while Galactus may be strong, he bested Galactus in battle. So Thor was saying he was slightly above Galactus, and Odin was slightly above Thor.
What was the title name and number and what was the name and number of the title Thor was referencing? They usually cite statements like that.
He was probably talking about the ridiculous “Death of Galactus.” The series was pretty cool in that it had lots of cool characters and decent art and writing. The premise was ridiculous though in that Galactus is an integral part of the Marvelverse that can’t die without everything else dying.
Not sure if this is The Death of Galactus as the name of the comic is a 12 part series called The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine. I took the liberty of taking a snapshot from the page.
Oh, but they didn’t resurrect “the Phoenix”. They resurrected "Jean Grey, minor league telepath/psychokinetic who occasionally uses the codename ‘Marvel Girl’ ". They came up with a really stupid retcon about how it wasn’t really Jean who became the Phoenix and was driven mad by her powers, but an alien entity who replicated her appearance and memories.
If I recall correctly, by that time Rachel Summers had started using the name Phoenix, and apparently somehow tapped into the Phoenix-Force for powers. And when she did so, she started wearing a red costume. Very bad omen.
Indeed, from the little digging I was able to do, it sounds like Galactus was duking it out with Ego, the Living Planet at the time, so Thor had more than a little help.
Now that you mention that I’m thinking I might own that comic. I’ll try to dig it out later tonight and report back with what I find.
If memory serves me correctly (which there’s no gaurantee that it does…), Ego trapped Thor because Galactus wanted to eat him and he needed help convincing purple-puss that it wasn’t worth his time. Or am I thinking of a Silver Surfer storyline?
In any case, I should be able to let you know later tonight.
