A few years back, we ordered a few household cleaning supplies from Target. I then began receiving frequent emails about baby supplies and setting up the baby’s room.
WTF??
I finally realized, this was because my husband had asked me to order a package of baby wipes for some reason or other.
My cell phone is inundated by political spam - on BOTH sides. I get texts and calls from candidates, asking for “Thomas”. I’ve had this number for at least 15 years. No clue who Thomas is, but I’m reporting him dead to everyone who calls. Obviously the phone number and name are being sold on by marketers who cannot be bothered to clear out their lists of stale entries.
10 years back, when we were trying to finance the purchase of a condo in Florida, Shitibank kept asking me about phone numbers and addresses. The addresses were all spot on, but somehow they had gotten a work phone number for me from 10 years earlier. And they demanded an explanation of my supposed history with Eastman Kodak - the former owner of our house, which we bought in 2002, had apparently worked for Kodak at some point. I had to write and sign about 5 different letters, one for each such “anomaly”.
I occasionally get texts from Democratic candidates in Wisconsin, apparently intended for my mom. Now my parents do live in Wisconsin, but I do not. When I was in college I listed my parents’ phone number at the time as my contact number for various things, so I suspect some data miner found a connection between my parent’s old number and my current number, and erroneously concluded that my current number is also Mom’s current number.
When I moved a couple years ago I started receiving advertising mail at my new address. Addressed to a someone with my own (quite rare) last name and a female first name that slightly resembles my own fairly common male first name. I know for certain there is nobody in my extended family tree with her first name. My then wife did not take my last name when we married, and the mystery woman’s first name resembles nobody in her family tree either. Color us both baffled.
I’ve lived at 10 or 20 addresses for the 45 years I’ve been out on my own. This mystery woman just joined my family at this latest address, not at any previous address. Odd.
I’ve since moved again, and she has not followed me. Yet. I wonder if I’ve given her the slip? We shall see.
From the looks of my USPS Informed Delivery email this morning, today I’m getting a piece of (probably junk) mail addressed to “Mr. & Mr. WildaBeast”. Huh? Do they think I’m in a same sex marriage? The two things wrong with that are 1) I’m straight, and more importantly, 2) I’m not married to anyone of either sex.
Yes, but they’re hoping to sell you two of whatever.
Even better if it’s life insurance polices so you and your alter ego can each get a policy and name the other as beneficiary. Then when you both kick it simultaneously (as you must) the carrier doesn’t have to pay off on either policy. Win win for them. You two? Not so much.
