I’m hopelessly heterosexual
I guess I’m kinda slow.
Mom & Dad were all I had
It’s the only way I know.

A song from Dr. Demento back in the ancient days. The song is an embarassed reaction to the singer’s being prop’d by an old friend who heretofore had not revealed his deviance.

Come and listen to my story ‘bout a man named Fred
A bold minister with lots of hate inside his head.
Then one day he was lookin’ for a cause,
and said to himself “I’ll hate homosexuals!”
(Oueers that is, sodomites)

Well the next thing you know 'ol Fred’s a picketeer
Cursing anything that acts remotely queer
and if by chance he should come back to this locality
We’ll have to show him some of our great hospitality!
(Tar, that is, feathers)

Well now it’s time to say goodbye to Fred and all his kin,
We’re sorry but we can’t say that we’re glad that they stopped in.
We think that somewhere else is where they really oughta be
Any other place and any other locality!
(Siberia, Timbuktu, don’t come back now, ya hear?)

Well of course not, you’re up in Madison, WI! Or as the college circuit preachers call it Mad-i-SIN. 😉

Actually, when the record was first released, I heard the album cut on air for a while. Now, it’s the radio track you hear. (Eden Alley is in the Bible belt, btw.)

PS: That was a hoot, **Baker**!

I wish I could claim the honor, but a local group(now disbanded) wrote and sang it at a couple of "rallies for tolerance) hear in Topeka. It was an all female band named Home Maid Jam.

I lived in Michigan when the song was released. I don’t recall ever hearing it without that verse. The video includes it.

That suggestion really isn’t too far off. The writer of “A Boy Named Sue”, Shel Silverstein, wrote an alternate version of the song sung from the POV of the father. In it, the titular boy named Sue ends up being an angry drag queen.

As for other suggestions, how about “One” by U2?

I think it’s more satire than anything, but one of my favorite 'Mats songs:

\*Here come Dick, he’s wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, y’know she’s sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who’s gonna fuss

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous

Don’t get him wrong and don’t get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain’t a dad
And she don’t need advice that’ll center her
She’s happy with the way she looks
She’s happy with her gender

Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at
The way you’re laughed at now

Now, something meets Boy, and something meets Girl
They both look the same
They’re overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who’s gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
And tomorrow Janie’s wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don’t last
And today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries\*

John Wesley Harding has been covering that song lately. [Here’s a link to a free (legal) download of it.](http://www.johnwesleyharding.com/liveaudio.html)

Patty Griffin’s song [Tony](http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/patty-griffin/105319.html) is a powerful song about homophobia:

> [@](#):
>
> They wrote it in the local rag
> Death comes to the local fag
> I guess you finally stopped believing
> That any hope would ever find you
> Well I know that story,
> I was sitting right behind you
>
> Hey Tony, what’s so good about dying
> He said I think I might do a little dying today
> He looked in the mirror and saw
> A little faggot starin back at him
> Pulled out a gun and blew himself away

I just remembered a couple more:

Melissa Etheridge’s [Scarecrow:](http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/melissaetheridge/scarecrow.html)

> Where can these monsters hide

> But they are knocking on our front door
> They’re rocking in our cradles

and her song [Tuesday Morning](http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/melissaetheridge/tuesdaymorning.html)

Dagnabbit, two more. 😃
John Wesley Harding’s [Elvis Has Left the Building](http://www.johnwesleyharding.com/music.html)

> [@](#):
>
> It was just one small step for humanity
> But it took him half an hour to cross the floor
> And the little girls scream and turn into their mothers
> Who got much more respect before the war
> Used to be the world would take our cues from one another
> Now just one man can tear the world in half
> Some idiot’s cracking jokes that he will never understand
> About how he hates gays and everybody laughs
> Please clear off the floor
> That joke just isn’t funny anymore
> Cos Elvis, Elvis has left the building
> Elvis, Elvis has left the building

And [When the Sun Comes Out](http://www.johnwesleyharding.com/music.html)

> [@](#):
>
> When the sun comes out
> His pa will be so disappointed
> To find out his son was double-jointed

> Some will be anointed
> The son couldn’t wait to do a turn-about

Sorry: The Replacements (Paul Westerberg’s composition)

It’s from the album _Let It Be_.

(_Gary’s Got A Boner_ is another excellent tune from this disc. Whether or not there’s some kind of theme going on here, I don’t know).
