Songs about outdated tech or fads

A-rockin’ and a-rollin’,
Spinnin’ in a hoola hoop…”

–Bad Boy / Larry Williams

Money for Nothing -Dire Straits
It’s been a while since anyone watched someone playing the guitar on the MTV. Also not a lot of color tv installation happening these days. I’d love to say we’re past calling folks with earrings (and makeup) “faggots”, but at least it’s not as commonplace than it was in the '80s.

I think the 50’s and 60’s were full of songs about dances and events that nobody’s likely to see again. Sock hops, the Twist, the Stroll, the Mashed Potato, etc.

That’s still the way to open large (46oz) juice cans; apparently a pull tab is impractical when the can has to be thick enough to support stacked cans that heavy.

Dim All the Lights-Donna Summer (1979)

“Turn up the old Victrola, gonna dance the night away.”

Ok, the song isn’t about Victrolas, but it is mentioned 4 times.

Telstar made it all the way to #1 in 1962

A lesser known Rupert Holmes song

The song dates from 1982

Here is an 1894 recording–but it doesn’t sound very good:

The Big 10 Inch Record

And people still buy church keys for the other end that removes bottle caps.

One of my favorite songs, BTW. The Revels are natives of the small town I live in.

TIL this is a cover.

10 inch 78s were already out of date by the time Aerosmith showed up.

Somehow I don’t think Aerosmith’s target audience was thinking that was about records. :grinning:

Sylvia’s Mother “and the operator says forty cents more for the next three minutes…”

And also, later, “big black Radio Shack digital portable phone”, although that is more an outdated company and terminology than tech itself.

Convoy! At least in the sense of the song, with CB radios etc.
Edit: put “movie” instead of “song” for no apparent reason.

The Streak - Ray Stevens

“Payphone” by Maroon 5.

Which oddly came out on 2012. This song may have been written 15-20 years too late.

“2Way Freak” by Three 6 Mafia. About two-way pagers.

"Fun, Fun, Fun (till her daddy takes her T-bird away) - Beach Boys
