There’s a fantastic song in the Maltby and Shire revue CLOSER THAN EVER, called ‘If I Sing’. It’s a man’s tribute to his father and it always makes me cry:

“Sweet Soul Music” by Arthur Conley. That’s the one with lots of horns that puts the “spotlight” on several notable soul artists.
“25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago is about writing a song in the middle of the night (or early in the a.m. if you prefer). Not sure if it’s what the OP is looking for.
