Songs/Bands that no one seems to remember

The Stone Roses were HUGE in Britain and are stilled regularly played on the radio and cited as influential by younger bands. Ministry I think still have a steady fan base and tour regularly and Faith No More are hardly a band that no one seems to remember. The Wonder Stuff have done gigs in recent years too.

I’m not really sure what criteria we’re using, but how about some of these (songs available on request :))?

Trapeze
Wet Willie
Sugarloaf
Lighthouse
Cactus
Jo Jo Gunne
Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Head East
Argent
Wishbone Ash
(Frank Marino and) Mahogany Rush
Tower Of Power
Sea Level
Rare Earth
Jon Butcher Axis

“Green Eyed Lady” still gets decent airplay, I think. I prefer “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You,” but I don’t think I’ve ever heard that on the radio.

I think most of my list is like that. A song or two that still gets played once in a while, but nobody seems to remember they had a whole body of work.

I had another list but realised it wasn’t really “Oh, I remember them!” so much as “Who the hell is that?”

Good one. I just heard “Run Run Run” on the radio a few days ago and thought, “Now there’s a band I haven’t thought about in a long time.” I think this album cover probably killed their career:

Very well remembered here in the Bay Area, at least.

As a fan obviously I think this isn’t right, but I do think Level 42 were going to be massive in the US after the album World Machine came out in '85, and of course they were huge in the UK and Europe for many years. They recorded albums with two of the four original members and a revolving cast including Alan Murphy, Allan Holdsworth, and Gary Husband up until the mid 90s. Then the lead singer/bassist, Mark King, put together a new band with Husband and some other dudes and called it Level 42 as well. They just released an album in the UK last year with contributions from all of the original members, though.

I think virtually everybody in the US thinks, “Oh, they were that ‘Something About You’ group” and they’re totally unaware of their fairly impressive post-World Machine catalog. As much as I liked the Gould brothers, I thought the two later lineups might have been as good, if not better… sort of unusual for a band losing half the original membership, as well as the major lyricists.
