_Aja_, Steely Dan. One of the finer performances by Steve Gadd; done in two takes. _Close To You_, The Carpenters. Hal Blaine didn’t touch the snare drum once in this song (unless you count the album version; a snare drum, albeit muffled, can be heard in the encore). _Wipeout_, The Surfaris. _Come Together_, The Beatles. Once upon a time, _Smells Like Teen Spirit_ by Nirvana also held this distinction. ---

Metallica’s “One” is all about the machine-gun double bass rolls. That’s the key to that song. In similar fashion, drums are the key to “Creeping Death” and “Frantic.” ---
