Songs inspired by pop culture

Jump 'n the Saddle Band

Iron Maiden have done a number of songs based on books and movies including

Hearts of Darkness, based on the Movie Apoclypse Now, which is based on the book Heart of Darkness. ALL of the lyrics though come from the movie.

Falling Down, based on the movie Falling down

Lord of the Flys, need I say more?

The Clansman, based on the movie Braveheart.

Number of the Beast is from a dream after seeing the Omen.

The Prisoner is based on the TV show of the same name as is the Fugitive.

I don’t think that Golden EArring’s Twilight Zone has anything to do with the show except for the name. Rush has a song called Twilight Zone that does though.

I’m putting myself in for most obscure song…

Brian May and Friends, Star Fleet Project.

It’s Brian May of Queen, Eddie Van Halen and three guys Brian May had over one day. They recorded (and released) three tracks: the first is an extended instrumental, the second is a blues number, and the third is a long take of a song about a Japanese childrens show called Star Fleet that Brians children had been watching.

Now that’s fun!

Well, the Dickies did a rockin’ cover of ‘The Banana Splits’ theme song. And ‘Bowling with Bedrock Barney’ about Barney Rubble. And ‘Stuck in condo with Marlon Brando’.

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned American Pie yet. (The song, not the movie.)

“How far back can we go? All I came up with is “Bicycle Built For Two””

—Thanks, dear, you got here before me (actually, it was called “Daisy Belle,” 1895).

There’s also “Sheba, Please Be Mine,” from the comic strip “Harold Teen,” and “Barney Google,” from the same strip.

Movie songs of the 1910s and '20s: “Take Your Girlie to the Movies,” “Since Sarah Saw Theda Bara,” “Since Mother Goes to Movie Shows,” “We Can’t Sleep in the Movies Anymore,” “Poor Pauline.”

I Wanna Be A Flintstone, by Screaming Blue Messiah

“Kodachrome” by Paul Simon

Blood on the Rooftops, by Genesis: “Hypnotized by Batman, Tarzan still surprised”.
The Carpet Crawlers, by Genesis: “Mild-mannered Supermen are held in Kryptonite”.

“Kryptonite” by Three Doors Down

Fuck you, Gordo! The Bloodhound Gang is the best band I’ve ever laid ears on!

Pencil Thin Mustache - Jimmy Buffett

I wish I had a pencil-thin mustache,
the “Boston Blackie” kind, or a
two-toned Ricky Ricardo jacket,
and an autographed piture of Andy Divine.

Oh, I remember bein’ buck toothed and skinny
Writin’ fan letters to Sky’s niece Penny.
Oh, I wish I had a pencil-thin mustache,
then I could solve some mysteries too.
Oh it’s Bandstand, Disneyland, growin up fast,
Drinkin’ on a fake I.D.
And Rama of the jungle was everyone’s Bawana,
But only jazz musicians were smokin marajuana.
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil-thin mustache,
then I could solve some mysteries too.

And that’s just the first verse.
