That song has been in my head lately! Including the El Paso bit that they left off the original album for some reason…
Every thing you ever wanted to know about being a Modern Major General
I’ve Got a Little List (modernized)
i just remembered something about this. It has two lists:
-
The long list of various historical and contemporary figures.
-
After the line “And each one there has one thing shared” he goes on to list three things they shared.
U2 - Numb.
*Don’t whisper
Don’t talk
Don’t run if you can walk
Don’t cheat, compete
Don’t miss the one beat
Don’t travel by train
Don’t eat
Don’t spill
Don’t piss in the drain
Don’t make a will
Don’t fill out any forms
Don’t compensate
Don’t cower
Don’t crawl
Don’t come around late
Don’t hover at the gate *
The Wheels on the Bus lists things AND the things they do! Or how they go! Or what they say!
Wheels go round and round
People go up and down
Wipers, go swish, swish, swish
Horn goes beep, beep, beep
Money goes clink, clink, clink
Driver says “Move on back”
Baby says “Wah, wah, wah”
etc.
Uptown* by Loudon Wainwright III lists things to do on a date in NYC circa 1970:
Well, lets go fly a kite in Central Park
Go & see a Shakespeare play
Have a lot of fun at the planetarium
And museum all the blues away
Well, Rockefeller Center and the UN too
Baby don’t make me wait
I want to elevate up & down with you
In the building of the Empire State.
*Terrible and irrelevant video images, though.
Thank you for hopping on that.
A rather short list, to be sure, but it is a list none the less:
I Dig Rock 'N Roll Music by Peter, Paul and Mary. It list three noteworthy rock 'n roll groups/individuals of the day. Mommas and Papas, Donovan and the Beatles.
Song has a cool groove to it.
His Swimming Song is a good one too
Where he swam, how he swam, what he wore or didn’t when he swam
Sometimes LWIII reminds me of Randy Newman in the Family Guy post-apocalyptic episode:
Fat man with his kids and dog
Drove in through the mornin’ fog
Hey there, Rover, come on over
Red-headed lady, reachin’ for an apple
Gonna take a bite, nope, nope
She’s gonna breathe on it first
Wipes it on her blouse…
We’re gonna move? Let me write a song about that!
There’s a background singer on the Kingsmen’s “The Jolly Green Giant” who is randomly naming vegetables.
Reasons not to trust animals: “Animals” by Talking Heads
“I found out animals don’t help!
Animals think they’re pretty smart!
Shit on the ground, see in the dark!
They wander around like a crazy dog,
Make a mistake in the parking lot,
Always bumping into things,
Always let you down, down, down, down…”
Surfing locations: Surfing USA by The Beach Boys
(Musically quite similar to ‘Sweet Little 16’. I believe they caught some legal flak about that.)
More from the Statler Brothers:
“The Class of '57”
“The Official Historian on Shirley Jean Berrell”
“Do You Remember These?”
“How to Be a Country Star”
So is Tex Ritter’s “Hillbilly Heaven.” (Dolly Parton did an updated version of it.)
“Yakko’s World”
“Wakko’s America”
“The Presidents Song” (by Yakko, Wakko and Dot)
“I’ve Been Everywhere” (Hank Snow)
Heartaches by the Number Guy Mitchell (and others)
Step by Step the Crests
Sixteen Reasons (Why I love You) Connie Stevens
We Got Love Bobby Rydell
Thank goodness for these kinds of threads to remind my that I’m old.
Kokomo - Beach Boys (lists beaches)
Let’s Talk Dirty To The Animals - Gilda Radner (lists animals)

I Will Not Be Your Fool - David Bromberg (lists things that must happen before Bromberg will be your fool)
Sidekick Heaven - Riders In The Sky (lists actors who played sidekicks)
Allan Sherman’s “Holiday for States”
There are songs about Montana,
And New York and Indiana,
But the song the nation patiently awaits
Is the song I now will bring you,
As I clear my throat and sing you
A love song to the whole United States.
I love you
