We all have our favorite songs and songs we can’t stand to listen to.

I was reading another Dope thread (something about Sex at 13, I think) and as I read my playlist drifted to “Glycerine” by Bush.

I like Bush (don’t start) and I like “Glycerine”, but as the song played on I found my mood had drifted from fairly good (nice sunny day, didn’t feel too stupid in my Latin class) to slightly despondant and think about a relationship (imagine that) that didn’t work out like I wanted. Once I made the connection I realized that the girl (I can’t imagine calling the ladies I date ‘women’ yet) had once told me that the song reminded her of me.

Needless to say I Shuffled onto an acapella cover of ‘500 Miles’, but the damage was done.

Anyone else have something like this happen?

I feel you.

The one I can’t bear to listen to but that I absolutely adore is “Time and Tide” by Basia.

A dear lovely friend introduced me to Basia back in the early 90’s. I can remember slow dancing with him to this song several times. He died in 1993 at the age of 30 and I miss him greatly.

Every time I think about putting that song in the CD player I have to think: Do I feel like crying right now? The answer is usually no, so there it sits. ☹

See, that one might have made _me_ a little sad.

I also can’t hear Aerosmith’s _Dream On_ without slipping into a sad place.

But it’s ok, because so many more songs make me wonderfully happy. I won’t throw out my radio just yet.

“And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. Any of the covers – the one I’ve got is Eric Bogle.

“The Tailor of Aquitaine” by Jack Harris puts me in a pensive mood, but nowhere near the first one.

I have two.

1. The Special 2 - Missy Higgins (I’m guessing that only Aussies will know who she is, but I suggest that anyone and everyone that has EVER felt heartbreak, to get a copy of this wondeful song)

2. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve. I chose to play this song at my stepdads funeral earlier this year. He bought the album the first day it came out many years ago and his car cd player chewed it up. The day he commited suicide, the cd spat itself out of the cd player. I cant help but fall apart whenever I hear this song.

_I Will Wait for You_—By, among others, Connie Francis (Futurama fans…you know why.)
_Shepherd Moons_—By Enya. Mostly because I think I first heard it on a PBS special on a pair of conjoined twins, and…well, you see where _that’s_ going, right? ☹
_I’ll be Seeing You_—Most notable, for me, for it’s use in Gary Larson’s first _Far Side_ animated special, about ten years back.
Ranchoth
(“Oh, I made myself _sad_…”)

I came in here to say this one.

People think I’m nuts when I say this, but the theme to the television show _Taxi_ always made me sad. I think it sounds rainy and gloomy and depressing.

And _Honey_, by Bobby Goldsboro. (I know, I know…)

In My Life from the Beatles. Makes me miss my Dad even more. He’s the one who started my love for the Beatles. I was coing to put together a compilation cd of his favorite bands/songs for his memorial service, but I didn’t have time to fix my burner _and_ make a picture collage for his service. So the cd never got made.

I deleted that song from my hard drive just so I couldn’t listen to it. I still get teary even when I think about it. Like now.

It’s my favorite Beatles song, **Seeker74**. I feel for you.

My sad song is [**’Vincent’** - or - ‘Starry starry night’](http://www.research.att.com/~jrex/faves/songs/vincent.html) by Don Mcclean.

The last lines:
“They would not listen, they’re not listening still
Perhaps they never will…”

Make me sad indeed.

“Between the Bars” by Elliott Smith. Though maybe the word is “depressed” rather than “sad”. It’s a really good song, but it makes me think about things from my past I’d just as soon leave buried. Or, as the first part of the chorus goes:

“The people you’ve been before
That you don’t want around anymore
They push and shove
And won’t bend to your will…”

I can’t let myself listen to it anymore.

I used to have an older gentleman who was my business partner and one of the best friends I shall ever have. We used to talk about all kinds of stuff, and because he was older and his health wasn’t that great, we talked about when we passed away. We both agreed that “Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes was a beautiful song and fitting for a funeral.

When he died a few years later, I was a pallbearer at his funeral. He received a traditional military ceremony at Ft. Sam Houston. At one point, a single bagpiper in full regalia played “Amazing Grace” a short distance away as his casket was lowered.

I cannot listen to this song today without remembering my friend and crying.

Second the Elliot Smith stuff. Much of it is downright depressing. No wonder he killed himself. ☹

Plus,

Cup of Coffee - Garbage
Windmills of your mind - Sting

So many more I can’t think of right now…

I’m right with you on “Amazing Grace” via the pipes\*\* stanger\*\*, both beautiful and incredibly depressing at the same time.

The one that gets me is “Keep me in Your Heart” by Warren Zevon, off his last cd before he passed.

“_I Can’t Make You Love Me_” (I think thats the title) by Bonnie Rait always puts me in a sad mood.

But the one that really slays me is “_Ten Years Gone_” by Led Zepplin. The whole song is about the passing of time and the loss of other people in our lives. It makes me miss the friends and loves who I used to have, but have not kept in touch with as I moved around the country. I get sort of choked up just thinking about it.

☹

“Long December” by the Counting Crows always makes me cry. It reminds me of the first Christmas I spent without my whole family being together, right after my parents’ divorce. That day on our way home from my aunt’s house, that song came on the radio and I cried the rest of the way home.

Actually, many songs make me cry, for various reasons. Tupac’s “Changes” for example. I won’t even go into the other rap songs that make me cry. Not to mention John Denver. I wouldn’t want anyone to think I’m pathetic or anything. :o
