Songs were often by Frank Jacobs, Dick de Bartolo, Larry Siegel, Tom Koch, Charlie Kadau, and Desmond Devlin). When “Weird Al” became MAD’s first (and so far only) guest editor for an issue, he found it hard to contribute on their song pariodies - something you would think he would excel at! - because when he writes a parody for performance, he can add or subtract a syllable in the text and slur together or extend syllables to make it work out. This gives him a little flexibility in making the line more humorous. Not so with a MAD song parody, where the meter must be preserved _precisely_ or it becomes hard for the reader to follow or to “hear” mentally the music that it goes with. Al had to change his process to accommodate the new challenge, which gives me a lot of respect for those who dealt with it month in and month out. Like you said, talented writers. ---
