This may ruin my music-snob cred, but… John Mellencamp’s album _Mr. Happy Go Lucky_. For years, I had thought of John Mellencamp as a former rocker who had jumped the shark into “serious, sensitive artist” territory when he dropped “Cougar” from his name (see “Henley, Don”). The songs on this album had electronic beats that were unexpected enough that I gave it a chance, and I discovered that the louder I played it, the better it sounded. ---

Well, y’all made me think of more. _Back in the USSR_ - the Beatles. To me, it’s the tune on which they rock the hardest. _Radar Love_ - Golden Earring. But only when driving. It’s not the same in the house. _Travelin’ Band_ - Credence Clearwater Revival. John Fogerty’s yell, the drums, and the horns. _Fortunate Son_ - Credence Clearwater Revival. Some of the best angry, white-boy blues out there. _Keep On Rockin’ in the Free World_ - Neil Young. See _Fortunate Son_ above. _Heavy Metal_ the soundtrack. Particularly both _Heavy Metal_s (Sammy Hagar and Don Felder), _Veteran of the Psychick Wars_ by Blue Oyster Cult…aw, hell, the whole thing. Again, while driving. _American Girl_ - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Always makes me think of _The Silence of the Lambs_, but it’s still a great song. _Six Days on the Road_ - Sawyer Brown. Once again, while driving. It’s got a nice build to it that actually makes one think of a sixteen-wheeler. _That Train Don’t Stop Here Anymore_ and _Whiskey Trail_ - Los Lobos _Guitars, Cadillacs_ - Dwight Yoakam _Fire_ - Jimi Hendrix. Love the drum part. _Hazy Shade of Winter_ - The Bangles Looks like I need to make a “Turn it Up” playlist on my iPod, too. ---

Another LP with a liner note “THIS RECORD SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD”: The Stones’ \*Let It Bleed \* (1969). Although, truth be told, most of that particular record isn’t so loud-ish (someone mentioned one of the cuts on it that _is,_ “Gimme Shelter”). But what MUST be played loud is the Stones’ contemporaneous live album, _Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out_. Also, someone mentioned Zep’s “Over the Hills and Far Away”. Agreed – especially the live L.A. '72 version! ---
