Songs that quote lines from other songs

More than a feelin’
It’s the power of love.

:smack: I knew I was dumb.

The Violent Femmes in “Gone Daddy Gone” had the last verse start off with:
“I can see by the way that you switch and walk,
I can tell by the way that you baby talk,
I can know by the way that you treat your man,
But I could love you baby, it’s a cryin’…”

Which is directly from a Willie Dixon song “I Just Want to Make Love to You” that’s been recorded by a ton of people, Muddy Waters, Foghat, the Stones, etc.

Actually, I think Love is the Seventh Wave also uses the same line.

Aerosmith’s “Living on the Edge” contains a few lines from a song by their idols, the Yardbirds.

Aerosmith’s song says, “If you can judge a wise man
By the color of his skin
Then mister you’re a better man than I.”

The Yardbirds’ hit “You’re a Better Man Than I” contained the lines:

"Could you tell a wise man,
By the way he speaks or spells…

Say the colour of his skin,
Is the colour of his soul?

Well, Mr, you’re a better man than I."

Crowded House, Weather with you

More recently, SOS by Rihanna not only samples musically part of Soft Cell’s 1981 version of Tainted Love, but also includes a line clearly derived from the other song: “You got me tossin’ and turnin’ and can’t sleep at night”.

Dead Can Dance’s *The Carnival Is Over * contains the lines “[the] procession moves on, the shouting is over.” These are the opening lines of Joy Division’s The Eternal

Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic” cites Genesis’ "Squonk:

I’ve got two from Neil Young’s Greendale:
from Bandit:

and from Devil’s Sidewalk:

Not sure of the Lennon song being quoted though.

Actually, the Steely Dan song predates the Genesis one by two years–they’re both referring to the story of the squonk.

The Beatles’ “Come Together.”

Pretty obvious, I guess. I was thinking of Lennon tunes and I forgot those other guys he used to play with.
