I guess I conflated him with Alvin and the Chipmunks, which is not a mistake to make if you are booking a childs birthday party 😉

> Fun fact: The GG is short for “Jesus Christ”, which was his legal name as given to him by his religious fanatic father when they lived off the grid in a log cabin in New Hampshire where he planned to eventually murder the family when the apocalypse came (and which he was preparing for by making them dig their own graves in the unfinished basement), a fate he avoided when his mother ran away with him and his older brother when he was 5.

I didn’t know that. But that definitely doesn’t make it less appropriate as a representation of the current American political situation ☹

Great pick. When I was younger that song was a banger. Not that it’s any less of one now, but it’s less fun to sing along with.

The first song that springs to mind is this lovely from Karl Wallinger (World Party):

“Save me, save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools, no no
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools, no no (I want to run and hide)”

Tom Morello’s mention makes me think of Rage Against the Machine’s _Bulls On Parade_, which features a verse that still kinda rings true:

> [@](#):
>
> Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
> Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
> I walk the corner to the rubble that used to be a library
> Line up to the mind cemetery now
> What we don’t know keeps the contracts alive and movin’
> They don’t gotta burn the books they just remove 'em
> While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells
> Rally 'round the family, pockets full of shells

\*Gestures towards punk music collection….\*

“November’s Big Mistake” by 88 Fingers Louie comes to mind though.

Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” as covered by Bryan Ferry. Apocalyptic, but also kind of ridiculous:

I just had a conversation with a dear friend about Arlo and his father Woody Guthrie, and thought about what was my favorite Woody song. And came up with “Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)”, which I learned from the Byrds version I still like best. No song from 1948 could be more relevant to our times than this.

> **[Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportee_(Plane_Wreck_at_Los_Gatos))**

> "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)" is a protest song with lyrics by Woody Guthrie and music by Martin Hoffman detailing the January 28, 1948 crash of a plane near Los Gatos Canyon, 20 miles (32 km) west of Coalinga in Fresno County, California, United States. The crash occurred in Los Gatos Canyon and not in the town of Los Gatos itself, which is in Santa Clara County, approximately 150 miles away.
> Guthrie was inspired to write the song by what he considered the racist mistreatment of the pa...

Chicago’s _Lowdown_

> Oh, my
> Life has passed me by
> The country I was brought up in
> Fell apart and died.
