It’s tantamount to saying “the girl I was with last night” or “the date I had last night”. Nothing gross or dickish about it.

I dunno. I’m not the most PC person around, but “the girl I had” sounds something you ordered off the menu at McDonald’s. And I interpret it to mean “fucked,” though reviewing the lyrics, it may not necessarily be so. Overall, though, the song isn’t particularly dickish. That phrasing does make me cringe, though. “A date I had last night” - neutral. “A girl I had last night” - sounds like a sexual conquest. YMMV.

That’s what I think. The girl is not a commodity to be consumed.

</div>

That’s _sort of_ what it means - I wouldn’t understand it to mean the speaker simply spent time with the girl last night, but that there was sex involved. But that’s not the real problem - the problem is that the girl is an object, not a person. I mean, if you had dinner with a friend last night you _had_ dinner _with_ a friend - you didn’t have the friend.

The phrasing is definitely dated. I can understand how it is dehumanizing, but it is in line with its time. Dated, not dickish.

And this was the point my collage GF was trying to make to me. The guy was bragging about his sexual conquest of girl in the song as if she were a high value prize to be taken. The fact that she had outstanding qualities just made his conquest of a higher bragging value to his friends than just of having sex with ordinary girl.

“Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix. Just 2 guys talking casually about the first guy murdering his wife for cheating on him. And the second guy saying “Shoot her one more time for me.”

>
> While I’ve always thought the girl was a small-town wet blanket, the singer admits late in the song that while he has nothing to show for his rambling ways, he is never coming back, but plans to keep on leading her on through letters or phone calls, giving her false hope and never allowing her to move on with her life. He is a dick.
>
> This, along with Michael Murphy’s “Wildfire,” was one of the most overplayed songs of the 1970s on “Soft Rock” radio stations of the 1980s and 90s

That’s not how the lyrics read to me. The girl back home calls herself the protagonist’s “number-one fan”, which I take to mean he’s a musician, traveling the county, trying to build a career. By the end of the song he’s living in Los Angeles, in a house that “looks out over the ocean”; he’s found some success, enough to buy an expensive home, anyway. And he still wants her to share it with him.

Meanwhile, she’s happy back in Tennessee, and doesn’t want to leave her home, even for him.

I don’t think either is a dick, because they still clearly care for each other; but their lives have grown apart. Time to say “I love you, and goodbye”, I think.

In case you do not know this, Pete Burns was more than punished (if that is your perception). He died the absolute most horrible death ever for the sin of not loving the beautiful body he was born with.

Well, maybe you’re happy to know the lead singer died a month before their album was released and never got to know the success they achieved.

Plenty of Revenge songs out there by Women too:

_Goodbye Earl, Before He cheats. Two Black Cadillacs_ (where two women kill the husband of one because he cheated with the other).

In the music and even film business killing your partner because they cheated is not considered a dick move. (Mind you, I think it is, but that’s not that way it is usually portrayed).

I think it the impromptu “Shoot her one more time for me” that really seals the dickitude. AFAICT, it’s not in any previous versions.

At least in “Goodbye Earl”, it was somewhat justified since Earl had put her in intensive care and the police weren’t any help. I don’t know the other two songs.
