> While I’ve always thought the girl was a small-town wet blanket, the singer admits late in the song that while he has nothing to show for his rambling ways, he is never coming back, but plans to keep on leading her on through letters or phone calls, giving her false hope and never allowing her to move on with her life. He is a dick.

What I hear is that he can’t give up on his dreams and she won’t follow him on the road. He keeps hoping she’ll join him in these cities and she keeps hoping he’ll rejoin her in Tennessee. I don’t think he’s a dick though, nor do I think she’s a wet noodle. Both should read the writing on the wall and let go.

Those are not the lyrics of the original song, on which I’ve based my opinion. (Was there a longer version?) I think they are both flawed people, in their own ways, but in consciously stringing her along, he’s still a dick.

No, they’re from “Belle”, in Beauty and the Beast, but they fit for the singer as well.

“Visions of Paradise” has Mick Jagger bossing some new girl he met around, not letting her have any of her own opinions, and ordering her to tell him only what he wants to hear. Oh, and flat out telling her he doesn’t want to commit to her anyway and that she’s just here for his entertainment/satisfaction.

"Don’t tell me when something is beautiful,
And don’t tell me how to talk to my friends
…

Don’t put your arms around me
And don’t hold me tight
…
And don’t ask me where all of the pain goes
'Cause you make me feel that I don’t know myself

…Just use your heart not your head

…So don’t tell me when I should come on home
There might be a time you don’t want me around
So don’t build your world around me
And don’t hold me tight

How about instead you go hire a hooker to be your lapdog for a few hours and then just leave… Dick

Anerica’s “Sister Golden Hair” shows plenty of dickitude.Guy in the song whines about how _“I aint ready for the altar, but I do agree there’s times, when a woman sure can be a friend of mine.”_ In other words he’s willing to screw her but not commit.

Anyone mention the Stones’ “Back Street Girl” (recorded late ‘66)? Gorgeous French-style waltz, but nasty lyrics — “Don’t try to ride on my horse…you’re rahhhther common and coarse anyway…don’t you be part of my world…just you be my back street girl.”

Just “I wish he’d resolved his relationship BEFORE he recorded “Please Come To Boston”\*… the second-most repetitive song of Top-40-Pop-Folk.”

The first being “The Edmund Fitzgerald”… quick, how does the chorus go (or the intro, or the bridge, or the outro)? TRICK QUESTION: There is none! It’s just those verses, one after another…same chords, same intonation, verse after verse after depressing verse…

.

\*I may be biased… Dave Loggins wanted to play at our college, and did an audition video. Still shot of him on a stool, playing Almost The Same Song ten times. Seriously, his whole repetoire sounded like “Please Come To Boston”…

… which, to get back on topic, is insensitive at best, but probably dickish on both sides of the relationship.

I actually kind of respected the narrator of “Brand New Lover” for owning up to the fact that he and his partner really aren’t right for each other and it’s time to part ways. The narrator might be thrilled one day to find someone safe. At the moment, though, he’s got some wildness to get out of his system, and he’s going to go chase those thrills instead of wasting more of his partner’s time.
