Oh god, how could I have forgotten? Aimee Mann - Wise Up Hell, that song stands a decent chance of getting someone to kill themself even if they weren’t depressed when it started. ---

Hmmm…I didn’t want to kill myself (well, sorta I did…I was 14, and “in love” and he broke UP with me for a girl _I_ introduced him to, dammit!!) but “I Can’t Live (If Living is Without You)” by Harry Nilsson pretty much used to fit the bill for me. Now I just remember it fondly as a “first love” song. “DOA” by Bloodrock should make everybody want to kill themselves. It’s the scariest, weirdest song ever made. I had nightmares hearing that song back in the bad ol’ days. I wouldn’t listen to it now if you paid me. ---

What about Joy Division’s “Substance” after taking some pills and slipping the ol’ plastic bag over your head? Or maybe some Elliot Smith? Maybe a little “All Apologies/You Know You’re Right” combo? Those guys were’nt just funnin’ around with their depressing lyrics. Personally, I had a very vivid dream a few years back where I was shot several times in the face, and as I was blacking out/dying, I distinctly heard Roy Orbison playing softly in the distance. I have to say it was as comforting as any music I could have hoped for. ---

(I never really considered “The Final Cut” to be a suicide song, just one of lament.) ---
