I’m surprised no one has mentioned ‘Beth’ by Kiss. You can almost imagine Barry Manilow singing this song.
Type O Negative covering Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time”.
I kept waiting for them to bust out laughing, but they went through the whole song in what appears to be total seriousness.
Catchy too.
Warren Zevon teaming up with members of REM - Hindu Love Gods - (if that’s post rehab, Warren, your program ain’t workin’) to cover Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”. Beautiful, but very frightening.
Travis covers Hit Me Baby One More Time also. Travis’
sober version blows Britney’s out of the water. They actually impart the song with some surpringly soulful depth.
Garth Brooks as Chris Gaines…I know it was mentioned before by Frank O. Pinion. Maybe Sappo and I are weird but we both like this album very much. We haven’t found anyone else who likes it though.
Kenny Rogers – Just Dropped In
I like it, too. Not as a Garth Brooks album, but as its own thing - which is how it was intended to be viewed, IMHO.
It’s nice to find someone out there who liked it. You are right about how it was intended to be viewed. I think a lot of people didn’t give it a chance because they couldn’t get past Garth-country instead of Chris-his own thing.
Before Zevon’s Hindu Love Gods album, there was his attempt at traditional, mainstream, safe rock 'n roll, “A Certain Girl,” on the Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School album. Warren likes to make bold moves, he has also taken on “What’s New Pussycat,” and I think Tom Jones would not be at all disappointed with Warren’s version.
when i read the title i automatically thought “Kiss - I was mae for loving you”
mainly because last week/the week before i saw a documentary about them.
They said some crap about the world affecting their songs and disco was big at the time and it just happened.
Led Zeppelin: Hot Dog. First time I heard it I thought I’d died and gone to a hoedown. Not my first destination of choice upon expiration, let me tell you.
I think Neil has probably departed from the standard formula (actually, does he even have a standard formula?) more than anyone else. Proto-grunge, rockabilly, country, electronica, blues, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few others.
Didn’t Neil do a be-bop album or something like that? Neil Young and the Blue Notes? Something? Blue Tones? Ring any bells?
I Shot the Sheriff – Eric Clapton
I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, despise, hate, hate that fucking song.
Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks, as I recall. In a moment of weakness I actually bought this album. It still doesn’t hold a candle to Decade.
Robbie Williams just released (or maybe is about to release) a record of swing tunes called (amusingly) Swing When You’re Winning.
