Songs, whose sonic "aura" are integral to them?

The Cocteau Twins, but especially with Harold Budd

To paraphrase the liner notes from the cassette that I have not seen in decades, this was “recorded live to two track in Dexter Romweiber’s garage”

Macarthur Park gets a lot of hate, but IMO it fits the bill nicely.

Never saw it before now. But how cute(not)

Oh yes, Portishead are a good example. As are Massive Attack. Their “Inertia Creeps” is all sonic aura. Creepy and dark, but great:

ETA: and as we’ve drifted into electronic music, this thread can’t live without the pioneers of that genre. I choose “Tour de France”, as it’s the attempt to capture the atmosphere of a sports event in sound and music, successfully. The whole album is great and my favorite Kraftwerk album.

“Loveless” was the first to come to mind, but, that being taken, how about “Mezzanine” by Massive Attack? That album just sucks the light out of any room.

Possibly everything touched by Brian Eno?

Roxy Music and Bowie were already mentioned and when you consider the “feel” of other work he has been involved in there is a case to be made that he is 99% “aura”.

Also already taken , just scroll to a few posts above. Great minds think alike and all that…

ETA: and another producer comes to mind (while actually listening to “Mezzanine”), Lee Scratch Perry. Listen to what sonic auras he could produce:

How did I miss the big preview? But yeah. Definitely one.

Reading just the thread title, the first thing I thought of was Autobahn. In fact, it’s their only song I know, so thanks for the link.

You’re welcome! As a further recommendation (really, all of their albums are great) and a third example of expressing moving by vehicles with music, here’s “Trans Europa Express” (train):
