Songs with a long version & short version that each get airplay

Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” (1968). Short version was on AM radio. Long version was on “Underground Radio” on the FM dial.

And that was one of the rare instances in which the short version was an improvement… the extended instrumental interlude is curiously uninteresting.

Two examples I thought of were “Sky Pilot” by Eric Burdon & the Animals, and “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James & the Shondells. I’m always bitterly disappointed when the emasculated versions of these two classics of the psych era are played. (As typically happens on Underground Garage… I guess they feel like playing extended songs is antit’etical to their aest’etic.)

Thread I attempted in 2011. In particular, Billy Idol’s “White Wedding”.

I loved White Wedding. I sure do wish Billy Idol had created a lot more music than he did.

There’s also a long and short version of “Twilight Zone”, the short version cuts out most of the instrumental interlude

…as well as the last (repeat) part of each chorus.

The long version of “Crimson and Clover” is gorgeous.
