Vanilla Ice: Ice Ice Baby. I actually thought I wasn’t cool enough to listen to it when it first came out so I thought if I memorised the lyrics I could make up for my lack of cool. Thankfully i’ve forgotten most of it now, except:"… if rhyme was a drug, i’d sell it by the gram". And of course the chorus, which, even now, loops incessantly in my head. Fun. ---

I know the lyrics to “Yo Ho, Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me).” Now that I think of it, add “It’s a Small World” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts” to the list. Um, yeah, I’ve been to Disneyland a few times; why? ---

I know the lyrics to many, many 60s/70s country songs because that was my mother’s favorite music and I was too young to change the radio station. I can sing along with most of Loretta Lynn’s oeuvre. I also know various novelty songs from this era, including one that I don’t think anyone remembers… an answer song to Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” called “Queen of the House”. _… I know the milkman, iceman, they come every day, They give me tips on horses to play And when I’ve got the time to spare I sit and wish that I’d picked A millionaire… I sing…_ ---

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought of **Ice Ice Baby**. Who can forget such classic lines as “killin’ your brain like a poisonous mushroom” and “deadly, when I’m playing my melody, anything less than the best is a felony”? Fun Vanilla Ice fact: a few weeks ago I was at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) for a high school competition. A friend of mine had the sublime experience of seeing Vanilla Ice perform at a frat house at the college. Unfortunately I missed the opportunity. Poor Ice. He’s fallen to playing at frat houses for his dinner, apparently. ---

There’s not much novel about a pasty white guy trying to learn a rap song, but at least it could’ve been something cooler, like Public Enemy or something. “_Groovy, groovy, jazzy, funky, pounce, pounce, dance as we dip in the melodic sea, rhythm keeps drippin’, tips the M.C…_” Also in the white-boy-rap vein: no less than three (3) House of Pain songs. Say what you will, Everlast came up with some good rhymes: “_You get me down, punk, get off my dick, you make me sick, like Strawberry Quik, your style is whack, you ain’t the mack, so yo, step back, while I attack, and sing a new tune like Boom-sha-lack-boom!_” ---

Ahem. “I like big butts and I cannot lie…” Of course, that’s still a good, fun song when I hear it on the radio. It’s oddly body-image-positive. I also immediately thought of Vanilla Ice, too, when I saw the thread title - and how I was so uncool I memorized the lyrics so people might think I was, in fact, hip to it. ---

You think that’s bad? I wrote a PARODY of “Ice Ice Baby”, based on the idea that Vanilla had a problem with head lice.
