> I didn’t know “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” by Great White was a remake. It was my introduction to Ian Hunter.

Who did it at least twice as well. Nah, make that ten times as well.

It was years before I found out that “Queen Of Hearts” was recorded in a rocking version by Dave Edmunds, before the countryoid Juice Newton version.

Edmunds also did it ten times better.

Santana’s whole way of playing guitar was a “cover” of the bluesy, Sixties edition of Fleetwood Mac.

I always took it that his cover of “Black Magic Woman” was his way of acknowledging the huge debt he owed them (well, to Peter Green, specifically).

> Another somewhat odd one: [“Me and Bobby McGee”](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_Bobby_McGee), as made famous by Janis Joplin, was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster and was originally performed by Roger Miller.

The Grateful Dead did it too.

Cause for about 30 years I thought it was an original Cat Stevens song, written by Cat Stevens. It blew my mind that the tune is from a 19th century Christmas song.

I was not aware that The Brothers Johnson hit, [Strawberry Letter 23, from 1977](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0bdLdTJdKI), was actually a cover of[Shuggie Otis’ original](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHe_15fJeCA) of the song from 1971.

I actually like Shuggie’s version better.
