Songs you've misattributed.

I thought “Gimme All Your Lovin’” was done by KISS. (It’s ZZ Top.)

I also thought “Runnin’ with the Devil” was Motley Crue. (It’s Van Halen.) I was likely getting it mixed up with “Shout at the Devil”.

When I was little I thought “Tainted Love” was done by Hall & Oates. No idea why.

That could be said for a lot of Badfinger’s material.

My roommate in university swore it was Cheap Trick, I won a massive bet. He also, thought Come Together was an original Aerosmith tune.

I’ll throw another log on the CSN and/or Y fire, I always have to prove to people that California Girl is by Chilliwack.

That’s because it sounds like “Twilight Zone” by Golden Earring, and both songs sound like Fleetwood Mac music to me.

“Nobody else”? How about KC, of Sunshine Band fame? A lot of folks felt Roland Gift was quite inspired by KC.

But yeah, nothing like the Bee Gees. Maybe EinsteinsHund is conflating the Bee Gees and KC – both big 70s dance bands, with letters as their names (more or less).

After reading this thread I realize that I have a superpower. My superpower is to be able to easily determine who does not sound ANYTHING like whom, and actually discern the real artist.

Some of these misattributions are amazingly comical in nature.

ETA: When I first heard Cyndi Lauper I thought it was Joe Cocker.

I was once ready to bet my left testicle (I didn’t) that “Everybody’s Talking at Me” from Midnight Cowboy was by Glenn Campbell.

Sorry, should have said “like nobody else I’m familiar with”. The only KC song I remember is “That’s the way I like it”, and it’s been decades since I last heard it. So your theory about conflating the Bee Gees and KC makes sense (but please note that it was Sahirrnee who thought that “She drives me crazy” was by the Bee Gees).

Right! My mistake.

I’m not music geek that DChord is but I am pretty knowledgable. I never thought “Horse With Name” was Neil Young. While I never thought “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” was CCRI did not know it was Hollies either. However I have had my confusions. First time I thought “Last Train to Clarksville” was the Beatles. Thought “Hello Goodbye” was the Monkees. First thought Tammy Terrell was Diana Ross. Thought British boy band Five’s only 1998 U.S hit was the Backstreet Boys. Pretty darn sure “Election Day” by Arcadia was Duran Duran. Thought “Fascination” by Company B was Madonna. Think of more, and sorry for the lack of paragraphs. It’s the phone.

Some more. “Pretty in Pink” by Psychedelic Furs was Bowie! Thought “Why” byAnnie Lennox was a man in 1992, though not her other songs. Thought “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was Wham even though I know Wham and George Michaels entire discography by hand.

Yep. I would have sworn the Osmond’s One Bad Apple was a Jackson 5 song. Donny sounds exactly like Michael in it.

I think you can be forgiven that one, seeing how Arcadia was simply Duran Duran without John Taylor and Andy Taylor.

Startin’ With Me”, by Jake Owen.

Until a few days ago, I thought that was a Montgomery Gentry song. Not only is Owen’s voice somewhat similar to Eddie Montgomery’s, but the song itself, lyrically and musically, sounds like something Montgomery Gentry would sing.

I only learned of my mistake when I heard Owen’s “Eight Second Ride” on my car radio, and looked the song up on YouTube to find out who it was. That led me to discovering that he also sang “Starting With Me”.

For the longest time when I heard it on the radio I mistakenly thought *Chandelier *by Sia was sung by Rihanna. A quick google found I wasn’t the only one, and that Sia wrote *Diamonds *for Rihanna and originally intended *Chandelier *to be for Rihanna or Beyonce, but then decided to record it herself.

I was convinced that Get innocuous by LCD Soundsystem is a song by David Bowie.

I still have a hard time believing it. The vocals are eerily similar, and Bowie is no stranger to the German style pop-electronica.

For a very short time I thought “Trouble Maker” by Olly Murs was done by Maroon 5. Olly sounds like Adam Levine and the music sounds like something Maroon 5 would play.

Also, there was a song by Godsmack, I’m blanking on which one, that I thought was done by Metallica.

Most of these misattributions I made were when I was a kid or a teen. Now I am very good at finding out which artists are who, by getting familiar with their voices and having satellite radio, it helps as it list the artist and title.
Still it does happen. Used to think “Gloria” by Them was the Rolling Stones, though not any of Van Morrison’s solo songs. When I first heard “Try” by Pink I was split whether it was her or Kelly Clarkson.

Not me personally but I have heard some of these songs misattributed by others.

My mom used to think that “Bad Boys” (Cops theme) and “Make You Sweat” by Inner Circle were UB40. Heard some people initially think “I Believe in Miracles” by Hot Chocolate was David Bowie.
I get annoyed when on YouTube some mistakenly title their video of the song “Bitch” to Alanis Morissette and not Meredith Brooks and do not change it. Maybe they can’t.

Just remembered, I thought “Because” was a Beatles track with Paul McCartney on vocals. It is the Dave Clark Five.

Hell, most people think UB40 is a bunch of black guys, especially the lead singer.

Well, The Beatles did have a song titled “Because” on Abbey Road.

Because the world is round it turns me on …

Until today I thought the 80’s pop song “Mercedes Boy” was by Jody Watley. Looking it up, it turns out it’s by Pebbles
