or, to be more accurate, giving her notice to leave. She moved in two years ago, on the fly after being kicked out of her last place. The owner of that one actually called the cops on her - a huge overreaction. Anyhow, I think that I’ve finally figured out that I really don’t like this person. She’s inconsiderate - uses my stuff and ruins it, then just shrugs her shoulders when asked about it. She’s lazy - she was away for the holiday, and I cleaned the whole place. This morning I got up and she had left a big pile of garbage at the front door that she was too lazy to take out. She’s obnoxious - she regales me with tales about how rude and mean she is to her current BF, and then whines when the guys dump her ass. She pays minimal rent - when she moved in, she was a student and I was trying to give her a break, so I only charged her $300 a month - about 60% of what I would charge anyone else. She’s graduated now and I think she should be paying more, I just don’t think I want her to pay it _here_. I own my place. I saved up for a long time to buy it, and she totally disrespects my stuff. She borrows my clothes and gives them back with stains - one shirt is perminantly ruined from a greese spot (unless anyone can suggest a way to get greese out of a Tactel Nylon shirt.), she put a HUGE (6" wide) hole in the wall of her bedroom. She walks around in muddy shoes and says “Well, I’m just going into _MY_ room”, forgetting that it is, in fact, MY room, which I am renting to her. She ruined my dining room table, which I had to replace. She broke glasswear of mine, which she has never replaced. She lets my bunnies out, and then claims it’s not her fault if they chew stuff - bullshit - if you’re not going to watch them, don’t let them out. EZ She makes $28,000/year and yet claims that she only has $200 for a car payment - her car has died, and now shes grousing about that. (Even though 6 months ago her mechanic said if it lasted 2 months she would be lucky - instead of saving $$ or looking for a new car she drove all over Hell’s Half Acre, against the mechanics advice, and now she’s bitching about the car not working. I guess she figured that the Magical Mechanic Pixies would come and fix the blasted thing. I really don’t want to live with her anymore, but she always claims that she has no $$. I know for a fact that her only expenses are a credit card and student loans. She _should_ be able to find a place she can afford, but it will be a dump. And she won’t have any furniture or bedding. Did I mention that _EVERYTHING_ she is currently using and abusing is mine? I sure couldn’t recommend her to anyone as a roommate - she’s cheap and inconsiderate and a slob. I don’t need her $$ - I never did - I was just doing it as a favor, and now, I’ve received a raise at work that covers about 1/2 her rent. I’ve applied for a promotion (I sure hope I get it) that would cover the other half. Gah! I don’t know what to do. ---

Boot her. She has earned it. Destruction of property is more than enough reason. You should enjoy coming home, not wondering what she has done to your stuff since the last time you were home. ---

Absolutely kick her out. You’re not responsible for her problems, and you shouldn’t live with someone like this. Life is way too short to live with a bad roommate. ---

You are both totally correct. But for some reason, I just can’t bring myself to do it. Maybe I’ll wait until I see if I get my promotion, and then I’ll have the $$ in hand, so there will be no net loss, if ya know what I mean. ---

I think I read that shampoo is good for removing grease - never tried it tho. 30 days is plenty. And make sure you’re there the day she leaves. Then change the locks. ---

I think two months notice is more than enough. I would tell her you’d like her to move out right now. Even if you don’t get that promotion and need a roommate to help pay the bills, you should get a different one. Life’s too short to live with this person. ---

A 30 day notice-to-quit is sufficient, unless the law is more stringent in your area. Here in Boston, 30 days is legally sufficient for a tenant-at-will. Make sure you give it to her in writing. Via registered mail if possible. Always always always CYA. 2 months notice is beyond what she probably deserves, but if it makes you feel better about making this very necessary decision, go for it. Your peace of mind should be the deciding factor, IMO. ---

RE: Grease stain. A year or two ago I saw a commercial where someone used someone else’s shirt to clean up a greasy mess and then felt guilty about it. They then used [product the commercial was advertising] to wash the shirt in the washing machine. Does anyone else remember this commercial? Was it Mr. Clean? Maybe Pine Sol? ---

Well, the housing market in Calgary is really bad - less than 1% vacancy, so I think I should probably give her a couple of months at least. Also, I’m not too worried about her doing anything really nasty - we have mutual friends (well, they’re my friends, but she knows them) and they would crucify her if she pulled anything. I blasted her about 18 months ago for being a shit and she bawled to them. Without fail, every one of them told her to grow up. She’s 30 years old - I really think it’s time she got a life that doesn’t involve sponging off me. ---

Try WD40 for your grease stain. Yeah, I know, totally counter-intuitive, but it works. Something about the old grease bonding with the new oil and then being easier to remove. Oh - boot her out. 🙂 ---

Give her 30 days. Tell her if she behaves REALLY well and works hard at trying to find another place you will extend it to 60 days, but the extention is totally up to your whim and nothing else. Tell her you can decide to not extend based on anything that you like, including the fact you don’t like her shoes that day. Put it in writing and have her sign it. That is what I would do, anyway. You won’t miss the money even if you don’t get the promotion. Trust me. You’ll find a way to not miss it. Can’t help with the stain, however. ---
