Well, the ads are gone for me, too, and the load time has gotten better. I’ve hung some garlic and a wooden stake on my 'puter, in an effort to scare them into staying away. 
Frankly, they didn’t/don’t bother me that much (as I said upthread), but do worry me in terms of driving off current members/discouraging new ones. Hey, I like this place, and would really like to see it not wither and die.
I await an explanation about what’s happening and what it will mean for the long run.
They’re there if you’re logged out. So, it appears that if you’re a member, you don’t have to see them.

Same here - came in unlogged, saw the ads. Logged in - hey presto, no more ads.

One thing that came about as a result of all this, that I do like, is the shrinking of the “Straight Dope” banner at the top. I always found it to be really too large (it took up nearly a third of the screen!) for the page, and it bothered me. Please keep that at the size it is now!
