Sotomayor Hearings

Just about what I expected, then. Thanks.

This John McGinnis guy is absolutely freaking me out. I think he eats brains.

Maybe they like what he represents?

Yes, that is exactly what is wrong with them.

Three Republican Senators said they’ll vote for Sotomayor today: Snowe, Lugar and Martinez. The Washington Post also confirms Republicans don’t plan to filibuster, which obviously wouldn’t work if some of them think she should be confirmed. Here’s guessing she gets in by about 80-20.

I bet that bet’s pretty spot on—all Dems vote for confirmation, about half the Republicans. I’m curious about Sessions & Graham, based on their lines of questioning and overall stubbornness during the hearings. I’d wager neither votes for her, but reserve the right to be pleasantly surprised.

Sotomayor was confirmed by the Senate for previous federal judge appointments, right? Have any Republicans switched their vote from “Yes” on those previous confirmations to those to “No” for this one?

Won’t know till next week or the week after. That’s a good point though. It’s hard to say it isn’t a blatantly political “Nay” if you’ve already voted her in once or more.

Graham is voting for her, I expect. South Carolina has a large Hispanic population now, and the Republicans here are starting to wise up and realize that strong anti-Hispanic rhetoric or actions could lead the state to doing a North Carolina on them.

She was elevated to the federal bench by a Republican president, no less (Bush, Sr.). She was promoted by Pres. Clinton relatively early on in his administration. I doubt there was much fight; I think many of her senatorial critics may not have been senators at the time (Sessions, for example, wasn’t).
