Sam Moore, one half of Sam & Dave has died at age 89. Their music had a bit of a revival when The Blues Brothers movie came out.

Here’s one of my all time favorite performances from the 1960s. And, of course, that’s the MGs backing them.

That’s sad news, but 89 is a good age to die. I’m a big Stax fan and read a lot about it, so here’s an amusing bit of trivia about their greatest hit:

During a recording session, Sam Moore took a bathroom break. After some minutes, Stax’ staff producer and songwriter Isaac Hayes got impatient and yelled “Sam, where are you?” He answered “Hold on, I’m coming”. Hayes thought “Hm, that’s a good line.” He sat down with his partner David Porter, worked it out into a song, and soon they had a massive hit.
