Clearly Peterson is sick of his teammates ribbing for failing to score a century last time.
And I agree you’re both right, anything the English pace attack can do (not much so far) the South African bowlers can do better.

This vaguely reminds me of something:
England 517/1d
England 620/5d
England 513
England 644
I’m sure it’ll come to me soon.
Does anyone know if SA have the biggest ever score in the previous innings for a team that has been put in to bat? If that makes sense.
I’m not sure I follow- do you mean when RSA made that score of 2/ 637 in the First test? They weren’t out in to bat.
I think don’t ask is asking, of all the times that a team has been put in to bat in Test matches, which team scored the most runs in their previous innings?
So, we put RSA in after they scored 600+ in their previous innings (a decision that one might think bordering on the foolhardy). Has anyone scored more in their previous innings when being inserted?
And the answer is - I don’t know - but I would be surprised if England/South Africa haven’t set some sort of record here by doing so.
Thanks I follow now. I don’t know the answer, but at least i follow the question.
I thought it would be a bugger of a statsguru run to get an answer - I don’t think you can do it.
Happily though, the answer is that the record team score in a Test innings - Sri Lanka 952/6 dec in Test 1 against India in 1997 - was followed immediately in Test 2 by India winning the toss and choosing to field. So that’s the record.
ETA: And all I did was look at the top innings score and then look at the next game. Might have taken ages.
Wow, talk about daring captaincy. Thanks for that.
292 each for our last three wickets now. If this opening pair can put on another 57, then Hashim Amla’s triple century will only be a par effort.
Doooooooomed. I’m calling this now, the match and series is gone.
That’s a pretty astounding stat.
As for putting your opponents in to bat after they’ve scored big aginst you last time; surely it’s totally contrary to Waugh’s maxim -“9 times out of 10 you should bat first if you win the toss, and the 10th time you should think about it and bat first anyway” *
*May not have been said by Mark Waugh but I’m pretty sure an Aussie captain said something like this once.
One plus for England though - India rolled Sri Lanka for ‘just’ 332 in the next innings back in 1997.
It’s taken us ten hours of bowling, but we finally have a wicket, as Tim sends back Smith.
Who’s this guy with the beard coming in? He any good?
Our long national nightmare is over/only just beginning.
The unknown guy with the beard has gone. The wickets today have been a full ball on leg stump caught by square leg and a run out. Next in is someone called KALL-IS. Sounds like a Star Trek villain to me.
And now Amla’s gone and got himself run out.
Star Trek villains always come to a bad end. Now, if only I can think of something daft to say about A B de Villiers…
Been kind of ignoring this with the ridiculous day we’ve been having in the Olympics, but a special century from Pietersen has put us back in contention.
Meandering to a draw this - not that anyone in the UK seems to be paying attention given the Olympics.
England are really under the pump though - a draw is a likely result in the Lords Test, given what the weather is looking like (and the proficiency of the SA batting line up), in which case that weird sceptre thing is going to have to be handed off.
This isn’t quite over as contest. SA are 6 down, and Petersen is batting at 8, being injured. 3 wickets to Pietersen (!), and now broad has taken 3 quick ones. 49 overs left.
Only saw the highlights of Pietersen’s century, but it was his best for a long time. He treated Steyn like a park bowler.
SA are 7 down now, as Kallis has gone.
They need the other wickets almost immediately though to make this c. 250 off 40 ish overs. Draw is still the massive, massive, favourite.
Absolutely. At least we’ve scored some points here, but it’s a shame the weather has taken so much out of the game. If we can take the last 3 wickets we need to send Pietersen out as an opener. I do remember a test against Sri Lanka where Vaughan and Trescothick scored at about ten an over to win, but the target there was only about 50 or 60.
SA declare at 258/9. We need 253 in 39 overs, which is pretty much stick cricket territory. The big question is, will KP open?
