South Korea Declares Martial Law

Of course. You might want to develop your point a little more, and ensure that you’re contrasting “Europe” with “Asia,” not with “The Orient.”

Why? As noted, “Europe” and “European” match two of the reasons given for not using “Orient” and “Oriental”.

It’s always best to put a bit of thought into the words you use, otherwise you might find yourself occidentaly upsetting people.

Yet more weird echos of politics in the United States. How much of this is just trying to curry favor with the Trump and tap into the same forces?

There are other reasons as well. Those same scholars don’t object to “Asia” and “Asian,” so it’s possible you’re not getting, from a summary, the full idea of their objection to “The Orient.”

This is a hijack that I would be interested in pursuing, but I expect we’ll be told to take it to another thread. I have thoughts on this as well.

Fair point–I had forgotten what this thread was about from early December.

Now or in the future, after their Lord and Savior is restored to power by the Military?

Last night, my wife and I were watching YTN News’ live stream on YouTube. Of course one of the top stories is the protest in support of Yoon. I was surprised to see a numbr of the protestors holding “stop the steal” signs and chanting “stop the steal” in Enlgish and Korean. And just now, I read this Reuters article explaining that.

SEOUL, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Supporters of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol are adopting “Stop the Steal” slogans popularised by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump supporters and said they hoped the incoming president would help their embattled leader.

As Yoon supporters gathered outside his residence in the pre-dawn hours of Friday in an effort to prevent his arrest, some carried signs in English saying “Stop the Steal”, a slogan Trump supporters used to question the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, which he lost.

Yoon avoided arrest on Friday after presidential guards and troops blocked efforts to carry out a warrant in a criminal insurrection investigation into his short-lived martial law on Dec. 3.

Trump, who is set to take office for a second term on Jan. 20, has not commented on Yoon’s situation and there are no clear ties between his campaign and Yoon’s backers.

But searches for the hashtag #StopTheSteal or “election fraud” in Korean on social media platform X show recent posts uploaded from Koreans featuring memes whose design appears to have been inspired by Trump’s “Make America Great Again” sign.

Breaking news: looks like the anti-corruption force is trying a nighttime raid on the presidential compound!

The first rule of nighttime raid club is that you don’t talk about nighttime raid club - especially on tv!

Given that it’s early morning in Korea, I presume they were talking about the raid as it was happening.

I think that’s it - it’s a play by play of an attempt to arrest a president.

More details in this MSN article. Corruption officers are unarmed and are using ladders to climb over fences.
