> _Exactly_. I thought it was very clear that they were angry with the CoS and not (necessarily) Isaac Hayes himself, though perhaps they fault him a bit for falling for the, uh, Super Adventure Club’s bullshit.

Right. It’s not just that they made it clear they don’t hate Hayes, it’s that they gave an explicit message to their fans “don’t blame him for leaving, blame Scientology for screwing him up and making him leave.”

(See bottom of book’s spine for example.) The levels represent the four “Dynamics” (or survival instincts) described in Dianetics. These are areas that human beings need to cultivate. The first being self; the second, family and sex-pairing; the third, social and professional life; and the fourth, humanity itself.

So they’re ripping off [Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.](http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/maslow.html)

> The thing is, the CoS deliberately uses the most generic and archetypical symbols imaginable. Once you’re aware of them, they appear to be ubiquitous. You can see Scientology references in everything. (Even in very cart-before-horse scenarios, because of its extreme syncretism.)\<snip\>It could be a sly inclusion of one of the most common Scientology symbols: An equilateral triangle divided into four levels. Or for that matter, the classic eastern system of [Chakras.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra) You know, this is how to turn a cult/scam into a religion. What starts out as pure nuttyness gradually adopts the religious and metaphysical concepts and symbols that we collectively resonate with on an unconcious or semiconcious basis; and eventually you end up with something that seems intuitively “true” if you ignore all the specific nutty claims.

Sometimes I think I wasn’t kidding when I postulated that the last two religions in America will be Scientology and the Latter-Day Saints, and they’ll end up fighting a religious war.

. Does this mean that when I look over my left shoulder to see if anyone’s passing me on the left, I’m in trouble? 😛

Close. She’s ten. I was actually kind of worried when she walked in just as Chef fell off the bridge, bounced down the cliff, and impaled himself on the sharp pointy thing, then got his face torn off by the mountain lion … because, well, that was pretty shocking and disturbing for ME to watch. But she seemed to be fine with that; she was just upset about Chef being dead. I told her that Chef was technically still alive inside his Darth Chef suit.

That’s cool, I wanted to delete that post because I thought it might sound judgemental - hence the backpedaling in the next one.

I’m happy you weren’t offended.

> I just realized that Giovanni Ribisi’s sister is Marissa Ribisi who is married to Beck. A big old Scientology party when they’re together. Oh Beck, I’m so torn on whether or not I should ever buy another of your albums.

I don’t know if this will make any differance for you but the Ribisis and Beck are both second generation in CoS. So they were being taught this stuff from a pretty early age.

I live near Clearwater – Scientology’s Rome – and often you can see Sci-ists walking around downtown in blue uniforms that look like Air Force uniforms. I don’t know if they’re Sea Org or if that’s just what you wear if you’re a Church official. Either way, it’s creepy.

Wow, I didn’t know that. I knew Beck had an interesting childhood spiritually but I didn’t know about the Scientology connection.

Thanks.

There’s a page here where they’re trying to find all the Chef sound clips they spliced together:
(they only found a few so far)

Looks like he really did say “I can’t break these locks” once, though.

Amazing episode. Their love of Hayes, even through the betrayal they felt came through loud and clear.
