I sent you an email earlier but in case you see this first, I will be happy to take Jax. Just contact me with details.
Got it, and replied. I am looking at maps, if you’ve got any meeting place in mind let me know. I am pretty good with the major interstates up your way. I believe I could be able to meet you as early as Sunday, but some finalization still left to do here as far as closing the house, etc. I will be in touch!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to everyone!
What I have done in the past is ask people to write a check to the local shelter/humane society/rescue group when adopting a pet and call that the re-homing fee.
Moot point now - evilbeth will be Jax’s new mommy! Barring disaster (knock wood) Jax will get to go to his new home Sunday afternoon.
Again, it was never that I wanted to charge anyone for taking my dog - there are just very limited means at hand of ensuring a complete stranger is serious and capable of caring for a pet. I can only imagine the responses I would have gotten had I posted “FREE AWESOME DOG TO GOOD HOME” on craigslist, of all places. No, really I don’t want to imagine - I am confident that Jax has found a great home, glad he’ll have a buddy to play with, and ever so thankful for the amazing response from the boards, most especially evilbeth.
Just in case anybody is unconvinced about charging a rehoming fee, this link from a local animal shelter explains it (about halfway down the page):

Essentially, the theory is that, by charging a non-negligible fee, you are preventing people who want bait dogs or medical research subjects. Granted, the linked item also says that sometimes the dogs end up with satanic cults, so the credibility isn’t great. But the point remains that there are many dog shelters that advise the original owner to charge a rehoming fee; people following this advice should not be assumed to be trying to make a profit.
Don’t worry–I promise I won’t donate him to a satanic cult.

I’m off! Headed to Tennessee tonight to go meet evilbeth tomorrow - grand adventures await!
Thought I had already apologized, sorry! Dain bramage. My sincere apologies to Time Like Tears (is that from the film Blade Runner, btw?) for my misunderstanding. I do appreciate very much her wanting to find homes for the critters and wish her all the best in her new venture.

Just an update.
Jax is in his new home and getting adjusted. He’s got his blanket and his toys and he has explored the house and his yard several times.
He is definitely playing second dog to my current pooch but there has been no fighting, just a lot of sniffing and some soft, low growls to remind him what is hers.
He seems to really like the humans in the family and is very friendly. We’ll see how his first night goes.
