Space Flight Sim game recommendations

haven’t gotten far enough to purchase a SETA.

Which X game do you think a player new to the X unvierse should start with? I had assumed it’d be best to start with the first. Should I move on to X2- The Threat or start with the latest, X3 (reunion or terran conflict?)?

hmm, interesting. If I decide to start up a new game (still questionable at this point) I might have to go check it out.

as for galspan vs bora, I’m more of a lasers guy anyway. I like shooting people with lasers, in the face (or at least what I determine to be the face of their space craft).

I did have a problem, though. I had no horizontal movement (couldn’t move left or right at all, I’d have to turn) which became a bitch during some firefights. Is this a known problem or am I just “lucky” again with my crazy computer problems (I’ve crashed a ticket machine at a train station, I shit you not).

(went for a smoke and missed the edit window)

I should note that, in regards to my lateral movement problem in Tachyon, I’ve tried remapping the keys to no avail

Odd. I mapped the left joystick to turn, and just used the <> keys on the keyboard when I needed to roll, since you really don’t (except to line yourself up over landing pads).

it’s not turning, it’s horizontal movement. Pointing forward and sliding left or right without turning (to avoid missiles and such)

Ohhh… there’s a lateral thrust upgrade but it’s only available in multiplayer.

oh… screw that horse excrement. lateral movement is important, should be standard in all space games!

There’s a cheat which will give you all the upgrade cards (including lateral thrust) but Bruce Campbell will make fun of you during every mission if you activate the cheat panel.

that’s totally reason enough to replay the game, thanks!

How does one activate this magical “cheat” panel?

I’d go with the latest one and start with the Humble Merchant set up. You get a freighter and a fighter. The whole game is easier to make money in.

SETA devices are dirt cheap - you need to buy one straight away. You need to also upgrade your speed and cargo capacity ASAP.

Also look out for missions - they pay well.

It can take a little time to earn money. What I did was quickly earn enough to get a few upgrades by hauling silicon and energy cells around the home argon systems. Get satellites as soon as possible and then use them to spot the good deals. You can also then remotely order your freighter while off exploring.

You can upgrade with Best Buy and Sell gadgets and eventually a jumpdrive.

A few hours play should get you moderately well equipped. The Egosoft forum is a great source of help and info. It is a very complex game and the tips you’ll pick up there will save you plenty of time.

Combat early on can be very hard as your fighter isn’t that great. People with better reflexes than me can do wonders with it though.

Also look out for ‘abandoned’ ships you can salvage for yourself.

Hit 7 on the Num Pad during a mission.

I recently read on article about some guy’s favorite indie games, and number 1 was this The freespace 2 source code project (scroll down). It looks cool I’m going to download it myself.

sweet, thanks for the tips, guys.

I’m going to be playing through the Freespace series again, I think, since I found my Freespace 2 discs (I just downloaded the first one so I can play 'em both though) then I’ll be heading along to X3 Reunion.

All the while pretending that, at some point, I’m going to finish Tales of Vesperia and have time to play Star Ocean: The Last Hope on my x360… :stuck_out_tongue:

Jumpgate Evolution is coming out at some point. June. Very nice game.
