Yeah, this was me as well. I had not heard the song before, but when the radio first announced the issues with Apollo 13, they played the song right after the news.
“He gets stranded in space” reads to me as an involuntary situation, rather than Tom deciding to cut the tether and drift away. I agree it’s still ambiguous though.
