Being a native born Tarheel I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the worlds best BBQ. Especially the kind served here in Lexington. I myself like Speedy’s, just down the road.
BTW, it’s pork BBQ. Not that beef stuff.
The most Invisible poster in the history of the boards. Posting invisibly since sept 1999.
Well, if you’re in Lansing, MI, here’s a few to try:
Famous Taco. Yum. Very good.
Sir Pizza. The worlds best breadsticks
A&W. Still have the best Root Beer floats around. The coney dogs aren’t anything special (not enough meat for me) but the rest of the food is yummy.
Diary Hill. Actually there is only one-owned by a guy my husband went to school with. It’s in Mason but they have the craziest flavors and best combinations for blizzards etc.
Ooh… Almost forgot Nathan’s, which kicks ass. Always a stop when I am in the NYC area, and I try and go to the original one at Coney Island for authenticity… YUM!
The Krispy Kreme shop that opened in Phoenix last year looks like the last scene in Field of Dreams with the line of cars stretching to the horizon. The original donuts are good to be sure but I prefer the buttermilk “sour kreme” or the buttermilk/chocolate.
In Tucson try Yokohama Rice Bowl. Once of the few places with a drive thru where you can get broccoli.
Yeah, the 14/5 interchange came crashing down in the Northridge earthquake and CalTrans decided to speed up the Metrolink construction. The original Otto’s was right there by the tracks on Sierra Highway, so it had to go.
Fear not though, the original crew made the move to Ave. K and 20th St. West (except for Otto, of course); so feel free to move back! LOL The other location on Ave. I is in the building formerly occupied by Golden Corral (if you remember that one).
You LAers forgot “Tail o’ the Pup” on San Vincente/Beverly in LA. Where else can you buy a hot dog out of a building shaped like a hot dog? Tail of the Pup
In my home town (Costa Mesa), I would tell people go to Taco Mesa. Taco Mesa
I forget the name, but there’s a drive-thru “fancy restaurant” in Newport Beach, CA on Pacific Coast highway. You go to the drive-thru window, order a “fancy meal”, and a chef in a kitchen above you cooks your meal. It then comes down to you in a small “elevator.”
Chiefy, I second that emotion on Fuddrucker’s. El yummo.
THE BEST MEXICAN CHAIN IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE: Chevy’s. All fresh. No cans. You can demand to go back to their kitchen and check. El yummo mucho grande.
I guess I’m fortunate that Texas is a universe unto itself, because the best Mexican chain, IMO, is Abuelo’s - hands down. There are about four here in DFW with a few others in West Texas, where they originated.
Actually, Carl’s Jr. is the equivalent of Hardee’s. Same food, same exorbitant prices, and same Star logo.
Here in da Patch, we’ve got a taco place called Jolly Tamale, which kicks ass seven ways from Sunday. And I used to work there. And there’s a family owned burger joint that serves amazing shakes and homemade ice cream as well-Krekel’s. The guy who owns it has a fleet of Chicken-mobiles. They’re great big late-model caddies, painted white with the Stars and Stripes on it. On the roof, there’s a huge chicken head.
I nearly wept when they closed the Chick-Fil-A in our mall.
Down in Carbondale, there’s two midwest chains that are present only in college towns, I shit thou not. Jimmy John’s, a sub shop, and La Bamba, whose claim to fame is “Burritos as big as your head.” Both will redefine your concept of after-bar cuisine. Some of my fondest memories in school are grabbing a sub with my roommate and plopping down on the curb in front to eat.
He weathered a firestorm of agony and did not break.
And while Yori raged against his unbending
courage, we took Kyuden Hiruma back.
His loss is great, but so is the gift his suffering brought.
-Yakamo’s Funeral
I go to IN N OUT Burger as often as I am in Sunnyvale, California.
And I need to give a big plug out to Amato’s on Saratoga Ave. in Saratoga. Great sandwitches!
We must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming us.

Chalk this up to Carl’s Jr recent (well, few year’s back) purchase of the ailing Hardee’s chain. I like Carl’s when I’ve got the cash.
My favorite local chain was back up in Minnesota: Burger Time! A couple in Fargo/Moorhead, one in Detroit Lakes… one in St. Cloud. Good, cheap burgers. Small menu. Good food.
