Specific questions of Nook vs. Kindle (need answer kinda fast)

Never, ever shop at Best Buy. That is a Rule of Commerce.

Purchased!

Through amazon…thanks guys

Well, don’t keep us in suspense! Which one did you get?

Hi.
Sign up with Kindle, and they give you an email account. (i.e. JohnSmith1089@kindle.com)
You have to indicate who is allowed to email to this address too…
Email any MOBI format file to there, and it shows up on your “cloud”.
Let’s say you’ve been a bad boy and searching bit torrent for MOBI’s you can download to your PC. Or… maybe you like the classics and download from Project Gutenberg. If you happen to get EPUB or PDF, download the freeware program Calibre to convert to Mobi. EMail them to Kindle and TADA! they download to your screen.

You can download it to any Kindle attached to that account.
I have a Kindle and several iPads, iPhones that run the Kindle app… I think there’s even PC and MAC Kindle readers; and Android apps.

If you get the cellular version, download anywhere; some Kindles are (were?) cellular data enabled). Otherwise, like me, you use wifi and anytime you are connected to a friendly wifi, download what you want. It stays there, on your Kindle or iWhatever until you delete it.

Oh, and for iPad app (not sure about others; does dropbox work with Kindle browser?) you can put a MOBI file in the dropbox. When you open the dropbox app and click on the file, it will say it does not know how to open it, but then you can click on the option “open with…” and select the Kindle app.

Caliber on the PC will read MOBI so you can preview your files.

Kindle paperwhite with 3G.

Expensive enough to make up for some of the previous crappy gifts I got her when I had a lot less disposable income.

Kindle early adopter, so I may be prejudiced.
My mom is older and has slow dial-up Internet acess and no 3G at her home. I bought her the basic Kindle because she did not like the touch screen on my Paperwhite. She uses the library wifi to download books from my Amazon acct (I linked her Kindle and my sister’s to my acct so they have access to my waaay too large library) or to check out library books.

I have the Paperwhite 3G because I like the size and the front light for reading in bed. I have never had to use the 3G, but if my power goes out and I want to buy the next book in a series I guess I’ll be glad I spent the extra $$. If I had a budget, I would go with wifi only for a dedicated reader. There is no monthly or yearly fee for 3G service (called Whispersync) on the e-readers. Also, I check out a lot of library books and they are only delivered via wifi.
Amazon won’t deliver them over the 3G. You probably could deliver it to your Kindle via USB from your PC, but I haven’t done it with a library book so I can’t say for certain.

I picked up the 7 inch Kindle Fire (the cheaper HD one with no camera, just wifi) because its text to speech function is superior to the one on my kindle Keyboard. It doesn’t sound like Stephen Hawking reading me a book. I use the TTS a lot when I’m cooking or knitting or my eyes are tired.
I also think the browser is faster than my old iPad.

The small tablet is nice, and I enjoy it. I prefer the dedicated readers for reading, though.

I use Calibre to manage my books. My position is that I bought a license to read a certain book on x number of devices simultaneously and I should be the one to determine which devices, be it nook or Kindle or some as yet to be determined device.

ETA: I didn’t read far enough to see you already bought the Paperwhite. Good choice~

Also - if you have a Kindle and iPad(s) and iPhone like me… and Kindle app on the iWhatevers. Or multiple Kindles (not like me - yet). If you download a book from the cloud, and read it, while connected to Wifi… When you close the book it reports the “farthest location reached” to the cloud. So if I close the Kindle copy, but have a few minutes to kill at the doctor and open it on the iPhone - it will sync to that farthest location and I pick up where I left off. So you can switch back and forth between devices and not lose your place.

Farthest location does not work for books imported into ipad Kindle app from dropbox.

I like the Kindle - readable like paper in in any decent light, including/especially direct sun; while the iPad mini fits in my hand but being a light source, is readable in the dark.
