OK, just took the quiz. Got 32 out of 38 singers correct. The only ones I didn’t know were Sheila E. and the Jacksons (aside from Michael & Latoya.)
I’m 41 BTW. And I wouldn’t expect too many twenty-something or teens to get more than a handful of them right. It was 25 years ago after all.
Shodan - the woman next to Cyndi Lauper was Kim Carnes - she was a one-hit wonder “Bette Davis Eyes.” She also did backup vocals for Kenny Rogers (who I’m sure got her invited.)
In retrospect, it’s funny to look at this ‘all-star’ line-up and get a glimpse at who was deemed ‘hot’ back then. I mean, Kim Carnes & Steve Perry get to sing solos, but Bette Midler gets relegated to the chorus?? And Madonna, the one female star most closely associated with the 80s wasn’t even considered a big enough star to get invited. (I’ll bet Cyndi Lauper tells herself that a lot. as she angrily shreds pictures of the Material Girl.) Prince of course famously refused to participate.
I never enjoyed contemporary music when I was a teenager at the time, and tried to stay away from it, so to speak. Nonetheless, **11 **I could name.
The ones I could name along the way was Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rodgers, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Diana ROss, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles in order of appearance (or recognizeance). (Very frustrating not to remember Cyndi Lauper, cause she was special.)
This video was the answer to the Final Jeopardy question last night. The question was something like “What music video was recorded in 1983 after the (whichever that award show was), and the recording session lasted all night?” I don’t remember if one or two contestants got it right, one said “Thriller”
I could sort of say I recognized 20 because I knew those two guys were Daryl Hall and John Oates, but I’d be hard pressed to say which one is Hall and which one is Oates.
It was kind of funny that for me, there was no in-between. I either recognized them and knew their name instantly, or thought “who the f— is that?”
Yeah, that’s right. I thought just Michael Jackson and Ray Charles had passed away, but I forgot Waylon was there, too. As I recall, he didn’t get a solo. He walked out on the session in a dispute over whether to add Swahili lyrics to the song.
Well, my wife and I won a high-stakes talent show by lip-syncing WeBeDaWorld.
The really fun part (and what won us the big cash prize… woo hoo!) was the over-acting and the split-second costume changes as performers sang a couple of words at a time.
So, I’d say we could name them all (yeah, if “Huey’s bass player” counts). And act it out…
I recognized all the soloists except the men who sang after Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson. James Ingram and Peebo Bryson???
Some artists (e.g. Dionne Warwick, Darryl Hall) took longer for me to recover their names from the cobwebs of my brain.
Bill Murray & Dan Ackroyd – Seriously?
Also surprised that Bette Midler didn’t get a solo.
Saw Lindsey Buckingham in the audience. Is he American? I always thought he was British. I don’t know why. Buckingham Palace?
It also struck me by how many stars were dressed in sweats and jeans, and then we have Michael Jackson with his sequins. I guess that was the very cusp of his descent into bizarro-world.
