That’s the one I was thinking of- made damn good but expensive fishing gear and clothing. Now it’s all overpriced cheap crap for teens.
Funny to see this thread asking the same questions I found myself pondering 13 years ago.
REI is showing signs of going the same way, and I really hope it doesn’t.
Must be fairly recent - about five years ago, they were suing the makers of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2 for copyright infringement, for including historically accurate* Pinkerton detectives in their wild west game.
*and by “historically accurate,” I of course mean, “morally repugnant.”
The Pinkertons are just another large PI agency. In the Civil war, they were spies for the Union- which is the exact opposite of morally repugnant. During the wild wet ere, they acted as kinda a national police force- which was badly needed.
Later on yes, the Pinkertons- and other companies- were hired for Union busting. That is repugnant, but they were not alone. It was far worse when actual Law Enforcement agencies did the same.
Hostess brands - Twinkies, Ding Dongs, CupCakes, Donettes, HoHo’s, Zingers, Wonder Bread, and whole lot more.
British Leyland, in one of its several rebranded incarnations, shut down the MG Car Company because they didn’t know what to do with it. The current MG marque appears on Chinese-built cars which never went anywhere near Abingdon.
