It really was a sucky movie, as I recall. A few good lines, though. I particularly remember Arthur introducing a prostitute to some snooty people, saying she was a princess from a European country “so small they’re having it carpeted.”

Or when Arthur asks Gloria what she does for a living and she reminds him she’s a prostitute: “You’re a hooker? Jesus, I forgot! I just thought I was doing GREAT with you!”

Or describing how rich he is: “I wish I had a dime for every dime I have.”

Or explaining why Susan called off the wedding: “As you probably have surmised by now there will be no wedding. The bride has had second thoughts and has decided not to marry me. Most of you know me… Can you blame her?”

I think it’s a classic. Dudley Moore created a great comedic character, and Sir John Gielgud may have been the best straight man of all time.

😕

“Rhode Island would beat the crap out of it in a war!” is a line from the film, it’s spoken by Arthur in reference to the prostitute’s fictional country during the same exchange in which is spoken your quoted line “so small they’re having it carpeted” (sic). Another line about the size of the country suggests extremely cheap cab fare to get from one side of the country to the opposite side.
Is your response tied to my given “Location” tied to my account? Did you think I was a jingoist Rhode Islander bragging against the small fictional country?

Nope. Just quoting from the film.

Or have I missed some connection to a naked Rhode Island Governor either in real life or mentioned in the film?
😕

I’m in California. My Governor has appeared naked in his movie career.

The prostitute tells Aurthur her wretched family history, concluding with the fact that (and my memory is sketchy on the details) she was abused by her stepfather since she was 10. His answer -
“So you had nine relatively good years!”

[QUOTE=HelloKitty]
My favorite drunk Arthur line, when he goes to Linda’s apt and her dad answers the door:

“Don’t you HATE Perry’s wife??”

And also when Susan’s crazy father has become homicidal at the wedding:

“(crying) He’s taking the knife out of the cheese…”

I also get sniffly when Hobson says:

“Arthur…you’re a good son.” ☹

I love this movie!!! I had such a crush on Dudley Moore.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

Arthur: I’ve always been rich and I’ve never been happy.
Liza: I’ve never been rich and I’ve always been happy.
Wealthy Old Aunt: Bah! I’ve always been rich and I’ve always been happy.

I’ve always loved this movie.

I have no idea how many times in my life the phrase “you must have HATED that moose!” could have been used, I am sure too many to count.

I didn’t recognize the line. I thought you were from Rhode Island and were bragging about that state’s governor, not Ah-nold. Sorry.
