One wonders how you can even enforce a “Level 10 federal employees are exempt” rule when _all emergency services are suspended_.

Are the police going to try to hunt down the killer the next day? Is the guy expected to turn himself in?

I kept asking myself why this really loaded family didn’t have a bunker…Curious about this: over the end credits was a “newscast” about Dallas being the worst hit city. My guess is that this voice over changes for different markets? If I lived near NYC, would that be “the worst hit city”?

I thought that was incredibly stupid too, but no hidden panic room fits with other stupid things like not having a backup generator or illuminating the house at night. I heard Dallas too, but I don’t live any were near there. I did see Wilkes-Barre get a mention onscreen news graphic.

I’m guessing those same high officials spend the night in heavily secured doomsday bunkers.

They probably do still get security; Secret Service & the military aren’t really emergency services. Speaking of emergency services, notice how they started responding to calls as soon as the sirens went off in the morning? That means those workers had to have spent the night at their police/fire/etc stations doing prep work.

> The movie’s surprise success has earned it a sequel. Looks like they’re going to get the chance to expand the mythology (assuming they want to).

As long as they keep the “YOU GET TO KILL PEOPLE FOR FREE!!” theming front and center, they’ll do well with the sequels (and any ancillary products). That stuff sells like hotcakes. (How far would Ian Fleming have gotten had he not given James Bond a License to Kill?)

I don’t know. I think I would really like to see a sequel about people who use The Purge to commit insurance fraud or engage in, say, patent infringement. At the very least, we should see someone rebroadcasting a Red Sox-Yankees game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball. Wouldn’t that be a sure blockbuster?

Is it that nothing is a crime during the purge, or only that there is no enforcement of the criminal code during the purge? I was trying to figure out how this could possibly be workable. If it’s just that there’s no enforcement, then any particularly huge crimes that require planning in the days beforehand could be eliminated, since planning a crime is as illegal as the crime itself…

I’d totally spend that twelve hours advertising big screen TVs specifically so you can watch the Super Bowl on them.

I can hear the trailer voice-over now:

“IN A WORLD in which the dream of Freedom from all laws obsesses the thoughts and desires of all mankind–leading to the shocking innovation of THE PURGE–_One man_ dared to commit the ultimate audacity: _Copyright Infringement_”

“…No one will be admitted to the theater after the start of this landmark in CINEMA TERROR…”

I do think it would be hilarious to have, say, a scene of lawless hordes looting a mall, and then just in the background, some guy running through a mattress store gleefully ripping off all the tags. Ideally, it would be a very serious scene, with the mattress guy something that you wouldn’t notice on first viewing.

Haven’t seen it, but my WAG would be the Broken Window Fallacy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken\_window\_fallacy](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_window_fallacy)… that is… get everyone to engage in a little mayhem and destruction for the night and woohoo you’ve created all these new jobs b/c someone has to clean up afterwards (sell new windows to replace broken ones, etc.)

The problem with that economic theory is that it’s not creating new wealth, it’s just redirecting where and when the same buck is spent. The $$ that replaces the window doesn’t go to buy an XBox next week, which means sure the window repair guy gets a buck but you’re not really creating net jobs b/c video game salesman guy doesn’t get that sale now…
To your point, though, there may be a bit of population control / survival of the fittest being dropped in there as well, which actually WOULD make more impact than the above rambling.
