It is official. I have been laid off. As seen in [this](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=298263) thread, this was neither wholly unexpected or unwanted. It was a gruelling commute (4 hours, round trip) on a gruelling schedule (12 hour days, night shift). Still, I am having conflicting feelings about it. On the one hand, it’s much better for me. I will get my vacation buyout, a severence package and I am eligible for unemployment assistance while looking for a new job. On the other hand, this stings a bit. I feel worthless and unwanted and unneeded and uneasy about my prospects. And goddammit, how could they do this to me?? Don’t they know how irreplacable I am??? (I’m a recovering addict, which pretty much means I’m an egomaniac with an inferiority complex. You’d have to be an addict to understand) Anyways, just thought I’d let you all know… ---

My recollection is that you hated the commute and pretty much asked them to fire you. And you were hoping you could find some way to get a severence out of the deal, which you did. Sounds like everything you wanted came your way. Congrats! ---

I feel for ya, **spooje**. I was “downsized” about 3 years ago after 15 years with the same company. It wasn’t taotally unexpected - over a period of 2 years the company went from 220,000 employees to about 100,000. That’s a hella lotta bullets to dodge. It had nothing to do with my performance. They made sure I knew that. They eliminated my entire department. It was a business decision - one that I understand. It still stings, though. You don’t have to be a recovering addict to feel what you voiced in the OP. It’s normal. Give yourself a day or two to be mad, then get out and get on with the rest of your life. Good luck! ---

I was laid off as of last Tuesday, too. It’s supposed to be a true lay-off; I expect to be called back once the tax season starts up again, and it wasn’t a surprise, but it still is a big change. If we were independently wealthy, I would just be enjoying a couple of months off. As it is, I’m gearing up my job search for something to make money at for the next two to three months. Pimp agencies, here I come. ☹ ---
