> Now one thing many people say is you only have to watch the 4th quarter of an NBA game, which has a grain of truth to it. Unless a team has a 20+ point lead the other team can still theoretically come back. So what if they changed it to this:
>
> Games will be 9 rounds of 5 minutes each. Each round will start with a score of 0-0, which is then played normally. Whichever side scores the most in a round wins that round. First to 5 rounds wins the game.
>
> This would be good because you could have round winning shots, and early rounds would mean more than what happens in current first quarters. The downside would be game times being too variable. A 5 round sweep would only be 25 minutes, versus one that goes the distance being 45 mins.

Then you’d have the endless fouls, timeouts, free throws, etc. just like you do now at the end of each game, except multiplied by 9.

I guess I fit the mold. I love hockey and hate the NBA. I do enjoy watching the NCAA basketball tournament, but that’s pretty much it.

I often listen to Mike & Mike on my way in to work, but now that the coverage is almost entirely NBA, I just don’t listen. I couldn’t care less about the NBA, and there is almost NO national media coverage of the NHL, so it’s a little frustrating.

So, I guess I fit the mold mentioned in the OP. FTR, Football is my favorite sport, followed by hockey. I casually follow baseball, but not a huge fan, and I also enjoy watching the occasional golf tournament and I love the Olympics, but I don’t enjoy soccer at all (and I’ve tried…it’s like hockey, but without the excitement and I hate the weenies who cry about every little touch).

It’s the perspective of anyone who has a better than cursory understanding of both sports.

**marshmallow** pretty much broke it down with:

> I’d go for subjective officiating/rules, pace breaking TV + coach timeouts, free throw shooting being boring, stars getting preferential ref treatment, and players possibly fouling out completely so coaches yank them for long stretches. Some of that is solved with DVR, but still.

When I talk about “show” what do you see when they play the highlights? Mostly massive slam dunks and the subsequent celebration. Give us all a break. Some guy goes in with a bone-jarring dunk and then acts like he scored the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. Problem is, his team is down by 20 in the 4th quarter and it’s only 2 points out of a hundred. The team needs to be shooting threes and the massive dunk counts the same as a simple layup. But hey, we have to have the show. If that is what floats your boat then have at it.

Hockey players usually love to golf in the off-season since that is the height of golf season, and some become quite good golfers.

It was a running joke in the day of classic Topps (fifies to eighties) that every single ballplayer would list hunting and/or fishing as their hobbies.

There is a lot to that. If a guy is a good enough athlete to learn how to hit a slap shot he is probably good enough to learn a powerful golf swing. A lot of them love golf.

I had the misfortune once to play golf in front of a group of NCAA hockey players. They would be hitting into you all day. “Hey guys, can I borrow one of your helmets?”

The problem for them was that they putted the same way they drove the ball. All power, no touch.

Are you seriously implying that the celebration after a dunk is remotely comparable to the celebrations one sees when NHL players score goals? You can’t be watching the same NHL I do.

The question was whether you were a hockey fan or a basketball fan. In other words, was it a hockey fan bashing a sport they don’t like, or a basketball fan noticing the downsides to their sport? Surely you understand the implications of your answer.

Don’t quite understanding what you are saying. I think you have what I’m saying in reverse. It’s not remotely comparable and that is my point. Two points out of 100 is not comparable to 1 point out of not very many. Also, a goal scored in hockey is a stoppage of play. In basketball the ball is still in play. The scorer should be getting back on defense, not celebrating himself for the highlight film.

Where did you get the idea that I was saying they were comparable?

Are you not implying that there’s a big celebration after dunks, and that “That’s not the case in hockey. In hockey, enthusiasm is OK but showboating is frowned on and there are ways within the team, the coaches and the opposition that keep it in check (excuse the pun).” And yet I see showboating after a goal in hockey all the time, while in the NBA, showboating after a dunk is actually a penalizable offense, and never happens the way it does in hockey.

I’m sure it’s happened at some point because the NBA has had a lot of boneheads over the years, but I can’t ever remember a guy celebrating after a dunk and not running back on D. Usually they might yell or do a little jump or point to the crowd as they run back. Some guys have a gimmick, like Jason Terry does his little airplane impression as he runs back, or the Birdman flaps his wings. Or if there’s a foul called he might high five/chest bump his team mates, but that’s a stoppage. Closest to what you’re talking about is when a guy bitches at a ref and his guy runs up the floor and scores. Kobe loves that one.

I miss the old days when they could stare down the guy they dunked on. Pretty much all of Shawn Kemp’s dunks would be technicals nowadays, especially the Lister one. I was :smack:ing when they started calling techs on Mutombo’s finger wave. Now if you even linger next to the guy you just sent on the floor it’s a T. Let’s not have any fun guys.

I could’ve written this, except I do like Indycar. Nascar is just boring to me.

I’m also a huge hockey fan, I’ll watch both pro and college football, and baseball if there’s nothing else on. I love the Cubs but I can’t always stand to watch.

I’ve gotten my boyfriend into hockey, and he got me into Formula One, so there’s at least two of us with that overlap!

Hockey and Basketball teams often share the same arenas, so there’s probably also some ill feeling over who gets priority for scheduling of games
