One record I from English soccer I don’t think will be broken is for a player to play in all four English top professional divisions in one season like Tony Cottee did in 2000-01. Playing in two divisions in one season is very common as quite a number of players either transfer up or down leagues during a season, 3 in one season an exceptional rarity as players rarely have 3 clubs in one season and when they do they are not likely to be spread over 3 divisions and to play in all 4 is unparalleled. This record would also be impossible to break under current FIFA rules which say a player can only play for 3 clubs at most in one season.

Emanuel Lasker was World Chess Champion for 27 years, while only three other players have held the title for ten years or more (Alekhine second-best with 17 years).

All the more remarkable given the thousands of land mines under the fairways, which unfortunately aren’t visible in the pic.

> I have a few candidates from other football leagues:
>
> [Teodoro Fernández](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teodoro_Fern%C3%A1ndez): I can’t find his season-by-season record, but given that he was top scorer in the league in first season, had a career average of 0.87 goals per game and scored a hat-trick in his last ever game, which was one of the biggest games in the Peruvian football calender, I find it highly unlikely that he did not score in every one of his 22 consecutive seasons in the Peruvian top flight for Universitario de Deportes unless he missed a season through injury.
>
> [Ernst Kuzorra](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Kuzorra): again no season by season record is available, but given that he was one of the most prolific scorers of his era I again find it highly unlikely that he did not score in every one of his 23 consecutive seasons for Schalke 04 (despite the fact he played during WWII, I don’t believe Schalke actually missed a season). Schalke for much of the time he was there were the dominant club in German football, winning the National Championship. The only thing I would say is at the time German/West German football, whilst having many great players, was amateur and the leagues were regional, with the national champions being decided by play-off (a bit like American Football). Interestingly at the start of the height of his success with Schalke 04, Kuzorra also coached Borussia Dortmund, who were later to become Schalke’s arch-rivals.

Fair enough, though I would argue that neither of those examples can be considered “top-class” football - much in the same way that playing in a regional US cricket league would not be considered “first-class” cricket.

Agree with you about Tony Cottee, though I’m not sure it’s a record that’s really in the spirit of the thread as it’s more about unusual circumstances rather than a feat players are striving to achieve :). Certainly an interesting one, though.
