What makes shoes squeaky?

I’ve got one pair that’ll squeak so much it’s painful one day, and the next it’ll be really quiet.

And what can be done about it?

That thread was asking mostly about wet dishes, but the phenomenon is essentially the same.

They use a floor wax here at Rutgers that I swear is designed to make us dorks look even dorkier. Once a week, for a day or two, it’s SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK down the hall. I solved this by going outside to find some dry dirt and stomping around on it for a bit. Squeak gone!
