Is anyone else watching this on Netflix? It’s…well, it’s OK. I’m three episodes in and I think they did not plan it well enough to be adapted to television and they do not edit the series in an interesting way. Just very flat, boring editing. They obviously cast villains and heroes. I heard they tried to cast Instagram influencers and the like and many contestants have claimed the show was rigged, but I find that difficult to believe with the strict game show requirements American shows have. I do know the Red Light, Green Light game was about 5 or more hours long in real life. Every time the people froze, the camera footage had to be reviewed and it took over a half-hour sometimes. And the contestants had to remain frozen during that time, which is insane. A very, very poorly planned game. It’s adequate, but not great. Mind you, Mr. Beast did a 30 minute Squid game show and it was a lot better, if I’m being honest. I’ll link it here if you didn’t see it. I would think it would be the production company you signed a contract with when agreeing to be on the show. If the production company is in the US and you sign a contract with them then US law applies even if it is filmed in other countries. ---

I really liked Squid Games, but I wasn’t planning to watch this, at least not as of right now. It just seems to me, without having your actual life\* hanging in the balance, it’s going to be another Double Dare or Most Extreme Elimination or any other game show that focuses on physical challenges. At least for me, the incredibly high stakes were part of what made it an interesting show. \*Or safety, barring any accidents ---

I watched part of the first episode and I agree with you. Obviously they cannot make the game actually lethal so they simulate it. The first challenge (run and stop when the robot looks) shoots paintballs. Then the contestant falls over and plays dead. I’d be happier if they just walked off than playing dead…seems too contrived. Also, none of the contestants are wearing face-masks or eye protection so not sure how they filmed it to ensure each is shot in the torso. ---

I’ll watch the second season of Squid Game itself when it comes out, but I have zero interest in watching a scripted “reality” game show the existence of which proves that Netflix completely missed the point of the series. ---

Welcome to the SDMB! If my Netflix Home Page is to be believed this show is currently one of the most popular shows on Netflix. I think it sucks and maybe this is just a flash in the pan as people check it out. I dunno. I hope it fails…what little I watched seemed pretty awful (I did watch the movie and liked that). ---

My biggest hope for the show is that it is scripted. If not, then any hope I have for humanity is lost. The number of people willing to share their secrets with the world, cry over nearly nothing, and have almost no strategic skills was depressing. Example A: the guy that nearly made himself sick for getting the umbrella in the honey comb scene. I get that it sucks, but having a full blown panic attack over people being mad at you on a game show was ridiculous. ---

I haven’t seen the show myself but when they were discussing it on the radio said the contestants had paint exploding packs on their outfits that were triggered remotely. ---

I’d think they would pay the losers something or they would not play along. E.G. The directors tell you to play dead when you lose. But, they are paying you nothing so you say “fuck it,” give them the finger and walk off. If they pay you something they can make getting paid contingent on doing what the directors want you to do. ---

I watched the entire show and am now re-watching with my daughter. 1. I was totally fine with who the winner was. Very well played. I noticed the winner only crossed the “red light green light” line with less than 5 seconds left. Almost eliminated in game 1. 2. This show was panned for no reason I can tell. It’s great.
