Look at the OP’s join date. When a long-established poster with no history of being a creeper asks a question, it’s presumed to be legitimate. How is it that you’ve been here for three months, yet haven’t absorbed the slightest bit of board culture?
Well, I wouldn’t go that far
Well of course things did NOT go smoothly down at the gubment building. Kid got some sort of piece of paper that officially declared that their SSN was XYZ, but not an actual card nor will they issue one of those.
Guess what you need for that, besides the birth certificate? A photo ID. And or two pieces of mail (like bills) in the kid’s name to the kid"s current address. Lets see. The kids been almost a shut in most of her life. Just left home. Never had a job, a bank account, or a driver liscense. Yeah, no problem there. And guess what you need to get a drives liscense or photo ID around here? A social security card and or two pieces of mail or some other photo ID.
Fun times ahead. Well, at least with the number now and that piece of paper some things can start moving forward. Thank gawd none of this is time critical . At least when she got the number some sort of SWAT team accountants didn’t swoop in and take her into custody due to her mother’s various possible shenanagins.
Thanks for all your “hard work” Cunt Munchausen!
Thats the worthless, crazy assed, selfish, lazy, bitch of a mom in case you didn’t guess.
What they told you is incorrect, I got a replacement SS card in person at my local SS office and all I showed them was my US passport. I even had two digits transposed on the SS#, :smack: So what I thought was my SS# was wrong.
I received a US passport with a birth certificate and a generic laminated(non-gov) photo ID with no problem. If they had raised a stink I could have had a US citizen “vouch” for me in writing. It is often easier to get a passport than a state ID or license as long as you have a birth certificate.
Do you think THIS kid has a photo ID or passport? (good grief even most functional middle aged adults don’t have those). Hint, we would have used those if we HAD those.
All in all, its not a big deal and there is not rush and we will get things fixed / bootstrapped up one way or another.
Actually I was offering a tip which is that it is often easier to get a US passport than a state ID or drivers license, the only thing is that a passport is more than a hundred in fees. State ID often requires proof of residency and SS card along with BC etc.
Thats all.
Thanks. We may have to go that route I told the SO we could just get her two magazine subscriptions that she might like
I guess we can do our part to help with the deficit one way or another…
If you think about it, its pretty damn stupid. You prove who you are if you can get someone to mail some shit to an address?
No school ID or school records? Library card? I bet the school counselor would be helpful with this stuff. If the kid is now 18, in my understanding the school records are now the kid’s property, not the parent’s. I never had a photo ID until I got my driver’s license, and I took driver’s ed in HS and they hooked us up with everything we needed to get a learner’s permit, but it’s been so long I’ve forgotten the concrete details.
Nope Eva Luna. A birth cert is all she’s got (and probably lucky to have that). It is possible Mom has some of that stuff and we could force the issue (as well as get her in trouble for various things) but we think the best course of action is just to stay clear of her whenever possible. Let the kid figure out who mom really is and what her motivations are all on her own.
Oh a funny story on the Mom. Various shit goes down at home. Cops show up at Mom’s place. Police take names and get the story while deciding whether to arrest random person X. And, in the process also find out mommy dearest has a warrant out for HER and she gets arrested too. There’s a “you might be a redneck if” joke in there somewhere.
We will get this worked out I am sure.
Board culture?
You mean that I’ve stumbled into a culture of stupidity, or that fraud, ignorance, predators and the like don’t happen here in the hallowed SDMB.
Never mind the ability to read.:smack:
It would be irresponsible and unethical of me to not point out what I’ve pointed out.
So what was it you were bringing to the party with this post? Because I missed it.
Keep on saving the innocents and making yourself look good sparky.
No, I mean the SCHOOL should have that stuff, and she could get it directly from them without dealing with Mom at all. If she is going to have to document she is who she says she is, early school records are one of the most useful things (at least in the immigration context, which is what I’m most familiar with). And they are also one of the acceptable forms of secondary evidence for a U.S. passport application.

ETA: in fact, look at that whole page for ideas of useful evidence (affidavits from an older relative, not necessarily Mom, that kind of thing).
We will look into that as well then Eva Luna. Thanks.
This comment is both out of line and insulting and I’m issuing you a warning for it, cynyc. You need to stop this kind of jerkish behavior immediately.

Aha - that’s probably where I got the idea of affidavits.
I think you said the girl has a birth certificate, right? That, plus school records (please tell me she attended a real school at some point) should go a long way.
Very very bizarre that the SSA gave her the social security number but wouldn’t give her a card. Someone wanting to do a little identity theft could probably do a LOT more with just the number, vs. the card (which I would think is mainly good for, say, getting a JOB). Yeesh. And in fact the card is really essential for getting a job - I mean, a passport is also sufficient for proving citizenship / right to work, but more people probably show the social security card, on an average day.
OK, just did a search for the I-9 form (that’s a PDF file) and it looks like to get a job she’d need both her social security card AND a photo ID such as state ID, driver’s license, school ID etc. - a birth certificate appears to be valid as well. Basically she has to have two documents from a longish list including those photo IDs, SS card, birth certificate and some others. She’s got the birth certificate, at least; how might she get a state-issued ID?
