I heard that Forsberg was out for perhaps the first few games for Colorado is this true? If so that would suck for the 'lanche.
He has missed game 1 (Av’s won 6-3), and is day to day for the remainder of the 1st round

Yes, any one of the Western Conference Big Four–Red Wings, Stars, Avs, and Blues–would have to be the favorites in the Finals. But don’t forget history–there are upsets all the time. A seven-game series isn’t long enough that the better team inevitably wins.
Now…the Goal That Wasn’t. As you probably know by now, in Friday night’s Flyer-Sabre game Philly was credited with a bogus goal–it went through the side of the net, which means it shouldn’t have counted. The League’s lame justification for allowing the goal to stand was that once play resumes there can’t be changes–an interpretation of the rules, not a rule itself. Philly won the game 2-1–by one goal which was never actually scored.
Now I’m not saying the Flyers wouldn’t have won that game anyway–they outplayed the Sabres in the second and third periods anyway, so it’s very likely they would have. But we’ll never know for sure–that phantom goal changed the dynamics of the game. It would have been inconvenient to disallow the goal after the fact…and, yeah, the Philly fans would’ve had a fit. But the fair thing–the HONEST thing–would have been to disallow the goal. And I’d like to know–why don’t the replay officials review EVERY goal as soon as it’s scored, just to be sure? (They probably will, now…after the damage is done.)
The whole mess is a shame for the Sabres, 'cause they got screwed. It’s a shame for the Flyers, too–I now think they’re going to win this series, and it’s going to be tainted for them. They are playing well for the most part, and seem to be the better team…but even if they sweep, people will wonder–the dynamics of the whole series changes if Buffalo wins that game.
Pretty damn bush league, if you ask me.
Yeah, it sucks. But I mean, the league just is that way.
Look at how they screwed Buffalo over last year, allowing the in-the-crease goal to stand. (And I say this as a Buffalo hater.)
Maybe it’s a thing against Buffalo?
Alex
Athena, how could you?!?!? Traitor.
AVS AVS AVS AVS AVS
I mis-wasted my youth.
sigh
Another game, another heartbreaking loss.
Why in hell did the Sens trade Tugnutt AND Laukkanen for Barrasso?
Revised prediction: Red Wings vs Penguins in final, Detroit in 6.

You do begin to wonder when this stuff keeps happening. But there’s an old saying to effect that you should never attribute to evil that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, so I’ll go with stupidity for the moment.
And while we’re on the subject of Stupid Officiating Tricks…the Caps have a right to be frosted that the whistle was blown just before they put the puck in for what would have been their second goal. Disallowing the goal was the correct call under the circumstances…but the puck was never under control.
>>>"Why in hell did the Sens trade Tugnutt AND Laukkanen for Barrasso?<<<
As a Pens fan, I’m very grateful. But I must admit, I was surprised at the time. I’ve been saying for three years that it was time to dump Barrasso. Craig Patrick picked the Sens’ pocket on this one. (But then look what he did to the Whalers in the early '90s.)
>>>Revised prediction: Red Wings vs Penguins in final, Detroit in 6.<<<
I’d agree, except for one thing–it looks like the Flyers are gonna beat the Sabres, and I’m not sure the Pens can get past the Flyers. But if Tugnutt plays the way he’s been playing, they got a shot.
One thing I have to say… Alfredsson is really the heart and soul of the Sens. Case in point: He says in public that the team has been playing poorly, and blames the forwards. So he goes out and has a three-point night as the Sens win one, 4-3.

2 games down. 14 more to go. Lord Stanley’s cup is going back to Denver…

With the results starting to trickle in…
Looks like Philly had a little more life in them than folks expected. Me, I’ve been saying for years that Lindros sucks, and Boucher proved that what Dryden and Roy did is still possible today. Result: 4-1 Philly.
I’m not sure this surprised anyone.
Again, a good call. Looks like MysterEcks is a pretty astute hockey commentator. Heck, come north anytime, and we’ll watch some Don Cherry videos…
(update to be continued as the playoffs continue)
Please, something against Buffalo? Who was conspiring against the Sabres when they only scored one goal in the last 210 minutes against the Stars? If they would get the puck on net once in a while one of these so-called “bad calls” may go their way. And for the record Hull’s goal was good.
“And so he says to me ‘I don’t like the cut of your jib’. And I go, I says, ‘but it’s the only jib I’ve got baby’.”
yeah, gosensgo, i underestimated the flyers. i also overestimated the sabres–hasek played well enough that they could have won that series if the offense had come through. so far, this is the only series I was blatantly wrong about…though the sharks just might boot the blues on sunday. (i think the sens are gonna come though after all–they have momentum now.)
personally, i’d rather watch tapes of the '91 and '92 finals. especially the last game in '91, when the pens blew the (north) stars away 8-0. now that was fun.
(programming note–this post has been typed in all lower-case, since the penguins eliminated the capitals.)
Another couple series ended last night. If I’ve been paying attention, the only series still active are the Sens and Leafs and the Sharks and Blues.
Good call. I kinda figured that Jagr (who reminds me of a 1984ish Gretzky) would be able to do the impossible, including the game winner last night.
I think Kevin Lowe did an admirable job leading the troops. If they can keep their lineup reasonably intact, Edmonton will be a team to watch for. But Dallas clearly outplayed them, and got a couple lucky bounces.
Ok, now that I’m done laughing at the final line of this statement, it does make me, as a Canuck, wonder what might have been…
but the Nords did take this one, as the Jets continued to show why they’ve never been a playoff team.
In closing, GO SENS GO!

ack! dang stars.
my oilers are golfing.
mind if i jump on your bandwagon gosens?
nice predictions, mine sucked bigtime.
(this post - just like the series - has caps that don’t show up)
Take care.
AACCKK! Did I say Buffalo would win? What I meant to say was…aww, hell, who cares.

Or not…
Wings win the cup, and bring the championship back home, to Hockeytown. Everything else is just details.
One thing is certain: The West will win the Cup. Colorado, St. Louis, Dallas, and Detroit are just too strong for the pretenders in the East.
Let’s Go Red Wings!..Let’s Go Red Wings!
Be it either Detroit or Dallas, bring it on. Avs shall take all comers, and the cup!

That was my prediction at the beginning of the first round. Of course, that was my prediction last year, too. For that matter, it was my prediction the year New Jersey handed the Wings their heads in the Finals. Gotta watch those details–sometimes they’re killers.
