What happens when there isn’t any more room on the Cup to engrave the names of the winners? Do they fashion another Cup? Do they erase all the names and start over?

A ring gets removed and put in the NHL Hall of Fame, and a blank ring is put in it’s place.

If you notice the part where the the names are inscribed is made up of several circular pieces. When the lowest rung is filled they remove the oldest ring and replace it with a new, uninscribed one. The removed ring is then placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

IIRC, they retire a band of the trophy to the Hall of Fame, and add a new ring for the latest champions, after they run out of space.

> The rest of the Cup changes too. The rings that comprise the base of the Cup are eventually retired to make room for new teams. Older rings are retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame (before we start calling it The Stanley Missile) where all but one of the original rings remain. (One legend says that that missing ring was stolen by a Canadien who melted it into a trophy for Montreal coach Toe Blake. That ring was supposedly targeted because it had the names of the 1929-30 Boston Bruins.)
