Stanley Kubrick...i'm glad you're dead!!

Thanks for the hints, folks. I’ll keep them in mind. wink

dammit!!Emote didn’t work!

I must agree that I don’t much like Kubrick. But then I don’t like most existentialist artists anyway. (and it hurt to call him an artist)

The fact of the matter is that the Shining sucked beyond all else. Stephen King wrote a brilliant novel about alcoholism and spouse abuse, but between Kubrick and Shelley Duvall’s inability to act, they ruined it. The message and artistry of it was lost, and it became just another scary (not really) movie.

I haven’t seen EWS, and from the commentary here, I am more swayed by the people who didn’t like it. You people who are defending it seem to have pretty empty arguments. But then again, I am prejudiced. I already pointed out that I don’t respect Kubrick’s work.

Well I guess I dont want to be the only one without a view.

Truth is I didnt like the movie, but I appreciated it. When I first got done with it I was at a loss for words, or better yet the only words that came to me were degrading and hurtful. After I had a chance to sit back and think about it I realized that:

  1. Nichole Kidman really doesn’t have that nice of a body, I mean she is skinny but…so what?
  2. This Kubrick fellow is obviously a nut, but has the balls to tell his ideas. So in my mind that gives him my respect.
  3. I dont wish he was dead, I just wish he would stop making movies. So I guess him being dead it a plus for me.

OK, his being dead aside, how does his making movies in any way, shape or form harm, bother or vex you? If you don’t like his movies, don’t go to see them.

I cannot get over this with people lately. Sheesh.

Ask the Gay Guy!

Kubrick’s no master of film, but he’s still one of the very best directors we’ve had - on par with Scorsece.

I could write several pages here, extolling his virtues (and mentioning his shortcomings) while analyzing his gift for peering into dark human nature, but several of you Kubrick-bashers clearly lack the patience to properly explore a topic and the intelligence to dissect multiple, subtle concepts.

Yeah, yeah, Sake, we don’t agree with you so we lack intellectual depth.

Obscurity does not equal profundity.

Now, now, Pundit. . .I was just defending the good director. I don’t recall you particularly attacking him, so my comments were not directed at you.

In fact, even though I disagree with just about all of your criticism of Eyes Wide Shut AND thought that the film was better than most Hollywood fare last year, I STILL did not like the movie on the whole. I can admire much, though. . .a bit too much to say it “sucked”:

Great
Set design
Costume
Photography
Supporting characters
Character development
Shot direction and framing
Lighting
Sound

Poor
Novella adaptation & interpretation
Acting by both leads
Plot advancement
Editing

I don’t like his stuff, he’s not my cup of cold sick. I’ve only seen a couple of his movies, and they were slow and dull and really drove me nuts. The Shining went on for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages before anything even happened! Even the approach to the house took forever.

Anyway:

For most people, I would’ve thought those factors are more important than the visuals. But then, maybe not. I can’t say I completely understand the average moviegoer.

Sake, I agree with your assessment of the film. However, poor acting and poor plot pretty much make any film a sucky film in my opinion. I mean, I’m sure Armageddon had great sound effects and lighting…

On a related note, is “sucky” a word?
