Wow that is pretty awesome. I don’t like the “documentary” style, but the way they’ve done genuine TOS style ships with contemporary effects is really cool.

So at the Axanar website, it says:

But that’s not how copyright works is it? You don’t get to just use intellectual property however you like “as long as you don’t charge for it.”
So what’s going on here. Are they banking on CBS not thinking it worth suing over? But I know that corporations feel pressure to sue if only to demonstrate defense of trademark etc.
Or is there some kind of agreement with CBS? The wording doesn’t make it clear that this is so, but could be interpreted as suggesting it.

I don’t quite get it either, but a lot of people working on it seem to be from inside the movie industry, so I have to assume they know what they are doing.

The legal limbo in which these fan film reside is a pretty fascinating area. The “Phase II” folks have been doing this the longest and have folks from CBS looking over their shoulders to make sure that no profit accrues. CBS figures that if nobody makes money from it, that fan films just generate interest in the real thing, so it’s kind of a win-win.
“God’s and Men” would “sell” you a picture of the cast and send you a DVD free.
Now “Axenar”, with the level of professional talent it has, comes along. Got to wonder how long CBS’s tolerance policy will last.

My guess is CBS granted them a limited license with the exact wording needed - I’m willing to bet that once it gets ‘done’ - CBS will want to market it - thats some pretty good stuff there.

That seems to be a fairly long-standing policy at CBS. As **E-DUB** points out, other people have been making Star Trek episodes with the apparent permission of CBS.

Am I the only one who thinks they’re making a mistake in setting it on the Enterprise and recasting the original characters? They’re just limiting themselves and inviting distracting & unnecessary comparisons. Set it on one of the other Constitution class ships of the same era with different characters. Drop a name or reference to TOS here & there for the fanboys to eat up (and argue about!). There’s just no reason to do it as a ‘remake’ instead of being more original.
Or would that violate CBS’ policy?

I total agree. Although to be fair, JJ Abrams has made the same mistake

Same here. I just started watching. I like the background and everything is very familiar and interesting. But Kirk’s voice is really so high and different with the same mannerisms that it seems like a parody at times.

I think it is cool too. I showed it to my husband last night and after seeing Kirk his first comment was is this serious or a parody. It just has a funky vibe to it.
