He wasn’t there because of the repute though, he was looking for some lost crewmen.  
All perfectly legit- you can ask T’Pol, she was there. Well, not _there_, but you know what I mean.

Wouldn’t have to call them ‘kzinti’, just something that sounds like a cat sneezing. 😉  
There’s all sorts of felinoid beings in sci fi, wouldn’t be hard to throw Niven a tribute without crossing any copyright boundaries.
